Greetings from a 2006 model Disco 3 owner who picked up his car today and already has problems. If headlights are switched on the auto box will not change gear and the brake lights are on constantly. Tailgate will not open, having worked fine earlier in the day at dealer. Transmission warning lights cleared after restarting, 20 minutes into journey home...

Hi everyone, not currently an owner but hope to be in the near future,of one of the following : D3 Auto , (Freelander2) or (ML 320CDI)
Apologies if the models in brackets offends anyone, but I cant make my mind up .Something keeps on drawing me back to the D3 (looking for a 06/07 model) ,just troubled by the problems I have been reading about.
Any advice re: buying would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in anticipation.
Regards
Peter

Hi plus Eight - Welcome
I've got an 06/56 S and it's been fault free (except for creased seat squabs- they were changed under warranty). Go for the latest and best spec you can afford from a main dealer and haggle like mad - it's a buyers market in every sense of the word.
The bad points are hugely outweighed by the good. If we only spoke about the good points on here, the forum would be boring.
Best of luck

Fedup, I'd follow Slimer's advice, but don't let it put you off the car, they're cracking motors
PlusEight, I'd looked at the ML280/320 before going for the Disco. Bootspace for teh ML was a bit too small & the fact I couldn't get a 7 seat version as well did it for me.
I also prefer the rugged design of the D3, a lot more iconic than the ML. If I'd have gone for the ML, then quite frankly it would just have been another car.......
06/07 models generally don't have the problems that some of the early ones had. I had the 07 model from new nad it's been brilliant. Lugging kids, dogs, towing, moving 'stuff' everywhere with no complaints.
The ML will be slightly more economical, but when you're spending this much money on a motor, 2 MPG doesn't really make that much difference!
Buy the D3, you're buying into much more than 'just' another vehicle. it! It's got a load of black bits on OK!!!
Campaign successful....
We D3, therefore we are.

After a couple of 'squawks', my one-week old 06 TDV6 S is now a dream (famous last words).
Martin - fantastic site. Who'd have thought that there were lots of other D3 owners who were passionate bout their cars. I thought I was the only saddo who was excited about a modern Land Rover...

| Park Brake and Gear Fault |
|
I've had my Disco 18 months and done nearly fifty thousand miles in it. What has been a good, comfortable and solid drive has been spoilt by a consistant failure which I suspect comes from a single fault. The automatic parking brake release doesn't work and nor do the reversing lights and reversing sensor, the information saying what gear it is in also takes a few seconds to work out what gear it is in. I've had it back to Guy Salmon in Coventry on five occasions and they manage to fix it so it lasts for about two weeks - except for the last time when it lasted for the best part of 3 months until it went in for its 45K service. When the vehicle came back, the faults had all returned. I thought it might be the gearbox not being properly aligned but Guy Salmon has never had the courtesy to actually let me know what the fault might be nor why they have been so incapable of fixing it.
