Last week I started to notice my box was whining a bit more than usual (it's whined a bit since I've had it) and the first couple of changes from first to second and second to third were crunching slightly after which it was Ok.
Over the weekend I got some gearbox oil and went to change it only to find there was barely enough in it to cover the bottom of a 2litre jug.
I have no idea how the box wasn't but, after giving it a flush through with a shell mtf and then refilling with genuine oil it sounds better however third gear syncro is very weak.
I am the second owner the first buying it from new; it has full main dealer history and has done145000 miles.
Although it is still working it won't get any better does anybody know if the parts are available to rebuild it?
Thanks
Rich

i'm no help to you but you could try some of the gearbox specialists in the landrover mag's and keep us up to date on how you get on (maybe some pars out of a defender or d2 are the same)

Isn't the gearbox (ZF S6-53) also used in many large engined BMW's, 545i, M3, M5, X5 etc. you might find a good s/h or rebuilt one somewhere.
Here's the ZF page for parts - suggest you try sponsors Advanced factors who may be able to help.

This might also help:-

Good luck.
Please let us know how you get on.

Bristol Transmissions will almost certainly be able to rebuild it. Mark.

A friend has just put a recon box in his manual D3, it cost £1200 just for the transmission. So the parts must be available out there

Thanks for the replies I will try and get hold of ZF hopefully they will either supply the parts or point me in the direction of someone who can.
At the moment as long as I'm careful the gearchange is Ok so I'll live with it while I save some cash, I will probably change the clutch and flywheel while I'm at it.
I'll ring around the breakers tomorrow to get some prices as well.
As soon as I have any answers I'll post them but I would urge anybody with a high mileage manual who doesn't know when their gearbox oil was changed to do it as soon as possible it could be the best £30 they'll spend this year

Not £1200 either - but from what I've seen they do a proper job - not that I'm suggesting the £1200 one wasn't done properly. Mark.

Bristol transmissions appear really good ......
They have info that says they will strip and replace parts if they feel its cheaper option ....
Think my long term plan for the oil leak in mine is to go for a trip down to Bristol from Manchester !!

Will do but I am going to leave it for a while.
It's not getting any worst so I am going to get enough cash together to fix or replace the box along with a clutch and flywheel and then decide whether to do it

I live in Manchester so just passing on information following search after search ..... The site says .....
'We are able to rebuild any type of transmission in house. This enables us to offer a very flexible service. Not every manual transmission requires a full rebuild; we are able to replace bearings only if the transmission is noisy, replace synchro rings if the transmission has poor gear selection. This service reduces the costs to up to 50% compared with a remanufactured transmission. All units are rebuilt using top quality parts such as Timken/NTN bearings, genuine synchro rings and forks.'
Maybe worth a call .... I am calling tomoro to know how much I need to save up
