GVIF, reversing camera and DVD installation guide

So, it has been quite a few weeks since I finished this mod, along with fitting the headrest screens and VEBA DVD player... Very Happy All works a treat and although quite time consuming not bad value for money for what it's worth.

Having done the "inexpensive A/V modification" was a valuable lesson and orientation with the D3s fixtures. No doubt, the forum was the most valuable resource of information however and, several thousand frequent flyer miles later, I thought I'd post the first draft of a "how to" which brings everything together, for those venturing into the installation in the future. The document is here.

I still have to proof read it and perhaps add some detail to the DVD installation but I think it's getting there to be a final document now.

I would welcome any feedback you may have on this draft to include in the next one.

Cheers!

EDIT:
After many months, I got around to putting together Chapter II of this guide Very Happy

Changelog:
v.1.0
– Initial release
v.1.1
– Added cover page
– Added introductory commentary
– Added alternative power options for reversing camera (Ch. I, Part II)
– Added Ch.II – Installing a DVD player
v1.2
- Added section on wiring the audio output
- Some wording corrections

==> Guide - Extend the multimedia of your Discovery III (September 2011, v1.2 uploaded)

Rolling with laughter Well, I only started writing over the past couple of months or so but been flying weekly for over a year Whistle

Noted a strange thing BTW, when in off-road navigation, if one chooses the 4x4 info and then press the compass, you get a part picture of whatever the GVIF is showing, strongly suggesting the 4x4 info screen is an overlay of the SatNav screen (as it would normally show the compass from the off-road navigation).

Out and about at the mo, but will post a pic or two to show what I mean... And v1.1 should be up over the next week too 8)

Hi Biz
Glad to see you finally got it installed. Nice manual, albeit seemed to miss a reference as to there you bought your GVIF unit Smile.

Still not got round to fitting my camera into the handle yet - so your guide will help me dismantle the tailgate - if i decide to do it myself with the limited time i have

I did not read all the text - but did you connect the can bus cables. I must stress again HIDS4U recommends not to connect these as they add little value - as the button and the remote do all the functions - and the risk of damaging the CAN-BUS is too high during soldering, cutting etc.

Regards
Ian

Hi Ian,

no, I did not connect the CAN cables, as you say, the button is small enough to be discretely fitted anywhere conveniently. Here's where mine is (just to the left of the steering wheel, IR sensor also fitted on opposite side of airbag disablement indicator):

One thing I have found however is that the picture from the reversing camera is very blurry, no matter how I have tried to correcting using the GVIF settings; is there a focus ring somewhere on the camera unit (though I can't say I can see one anywhere...)

Hi Niko
The image should not be blurry
Check there is no condensation or protective cover on the camera
