Mine failed in teh same way as above. The best way to fix it is to break the remining lug in two keeping the cable in there as support and insert the one part of the lug into where the angled part once was.
Hope this helps.

Thanks to the posts here I have 'forced' my way into the lower tailgate and managed to realease the upper section.
I wouldn't have managed to do it without breaking the trim as I was trying to get at the motor from the bottom!
It also helps to have very small hands to grab and pull the cable.
Ian..so what can I fiddle with today that ain't broken ...?

Mine went this morning, usual spot, the 'L'shape of the end of the cable. Following advice from our learned friends on this site I have managed to repair it, I used the innards if a cable connecting block and a cable tie. Worked fine, the only tricky bit were the two plastic end sections by the tail gate support wires, ive snapped the lugs off so had to resort to some strong glue.
Having just had mine fixed under warranty I really must take the time to take the tailgate apart and fit a manual overide cable for the next time I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
Used the notes here to repair mine, did the same as Vortech to reseat the cable ferrule
Had to be vicious to get the carpet board out, was being gentle and only succeeded in pulling the carpet from the backing board. Came out in the end, don't bothe with butter knives, BIG flat screwdrivers !!!
also added a "Lifeline", short nylon string that cames out the side, you never know if it happens again it may work............
Thanks again for all the pointers

I had mine go last winter. Getting the carpet out was a real pig, not helped by the temperature being close to zero which made the plastic feel very brittle, but I managed not to destroy it or the carpet. I did however manage to remove copious amounts of skin, and in so doing deposited a fair amount of blood on the carpet and inside the lower tailgate.
Looking at the design of the bent bit of die-cast metal it strikes me as one to lay at the door of the accountants/cost-cutters, its just too weak and fragile to do the job. Personally I sentence them to a life of changing tailgate lock mechanisms in an industrial air blast refrigerator.....Rob Smith

mine went last night - after much xmas shopping with SWMBO involving climbing into the boot via the back seats I decided the little was getting it tonight (the boot latch cable not SWMBO!) after about an hour and a half of rooting around in there I eventually released the upper tailgate by poking around in the latch with a small screwdriver whilst leaning on the tailgate from the inside (I wasn't going to have to do it twice!!!!!).
Managed to repair the cable using the innards of a terminal block and a small allen key (to replace the dreaded L shaped piece. Held the allen key onto the cable using the terminal block.
Despite 3 inches of snow on the ground and it being minus 5 degrees outside it still beat having it done under warranty as that would have cost me at least £20 in fuel to the stealers and back and probably about 5hrs of my time......thought for today....to renew warranty in May 2011 or not?? Hmmm......
A big thank you to all on this and related threads for your help cos no doubt there's more xmas shopping on the cards tomorrow with SWMBO and I've had enough of crawling into the boot!!!!!
(BTW which dim wit designed that lug on the cable????)
My advice - strip it down and replace it BEFORE it breaks!!

My repair last week obviously wasn't as good as I thought, as it went again last night
Will see what went wrong tonight, but in the meantime does anyone know what the part no. of the cable and the actuator bit is ??
Just in case I have to resort to my local dealer as Nick is unavailable

Mine went last week while boot was full of large items to cap it all one of my rear doors also failed getting really p!$$ed off taking out three child seats climbing over the rear seats to get out the buggy. Might have a go at it today now that the temp is above zero for the first time in a month.
