Liftgate Latch: How Lucky is this? :)

While working away on my rig today I figured this would be a good time to pull apart the Tailgate and inspect the Liftgate Latching mechanism. My LR3 is an 05, and the Latch has been trouble free so far, but I felt like I was playing Russian Roulette with it, especially with a load of patio stones in the back a few weeks ago.

So, after literally 10 minutes to get it apart this is what I found. Cracked right through and ready to come apart:

I ended up securing it by getting liberal with Zip Ties. Despite the hokeyness of the repair, its quite sturdy and cost lest than a Dollar.

Not shown is that the tail of the Zip Tie around the cable is passed through a small hole in the Tailgate. Should my Zip Tie linkage fail. I can simply pull on it to open manually.

Anyway, morale of the story here is 10 minutes today was sanity saved from having to thrash apart the tailgate while stuck shut.

During a lull in the work on my car (awaiting delivery of a few parts) and after reading many of the posts about the problem, I decided to check out the latch on the rear upper tailgate. I found that the "L" piece on mine was cracked as in Armybucks photos above so now have a new latch on order and feel lucky I found it in time.
