Tailgate won't open *Fixed* |
|
Help please I'm at a loss,
We got home this afternoon with a boot full of shopping (the joys ) to find the tailgate wouldn't open.
I've tried everything, the mechanism makes a noise but the thing just won't budge.
Anyone got any ideas before I resort to taking it to the local stealer?? One Wife.......Livid

A very common problem, but rather than repeat what has been covered numerous times I recommend using the search function. All your queries will be answered.

Push the unlock button on the dash and hold for a count of say 10 (or more if your fast !) While someone else tries to open the gate from outside - if your upper lock switch is screwed (water ingress) then this will open it. If it makes no effect - your lower latch cable / assembly may be screwed - bit of a pain to sort and youll need to read the threads
Good luck
Mine was the water ingress (not failed since I cleaned it all out - but I have to replace the assembly as I bust a bit getting it open !) Big hands no brain !
Lurk Why do I have 2 big hands when my D3 maintenance requires small hands and at least three of them ?

by the way, new handle (complete with LR logo) only around £45, simple unbolt and replace like for like, takes around 20 mins.
however, if the upper doors does not open in the future even after changing the new handle, new cable needed as I found out myself.

If pressing the handle leads to the noise, the handle is fine. It will be actuator/cable in the lower tailgate. My 08MY is going in to have this done on Wednesday when I get the 60k service done. I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Thanks,
Yup pressing the handle makes a noise.
I'll check the cable next weekend (no doubt do more damage and cost me more in the process). One Wife.......Livid

There are a couple of cracking guides (including the Land Rover official version) on how to do it if you search on here I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

well - as I broke my inner plastic bit - take it easy especially if its cold - the plastic is more brittle.
You can carefull peal back the outer edges of the rubber cover - it sits wrapped around the inner white switch recess - which is itself held into the handle assembly via a pair of 'tabs' or one in my case !- as far I could tell this is the only water seal and it obviuosly isn't up to the job. ... anyway, the rubber moulding wraps around and below about 5mm of the plastic moulding - a small screw driver will help - once off you can see the problem inside.
The last few weeks of cold weather has seen my switch freeze up - I have cleaned it out three times (about weekly) - I am thinking of using some silicon gel to squeeze into the inner seal face of the rubber to try to reduce moisture ingress - I can't see how else to improve things. Without buying a new handle assembly.
Maybe warm it all up before you start - to make it a bit more supple !
Good look

Thanks for all the great advice and docs on this site - repaired my lower tailgate cable last night - only one skinned knuckle and I have size 7 1/2 hands! Lifting the black plastic cover off the back of the actuator was easiest for me to get to the cable and release the catch.
What doofus designed the right-angled thingy out of such weak 'metal'? Anyone that has been on a bike knows that the barrel connectors on the end of brake cables go on forever and withstand loads of tension.
Followed the repair tips of others and a 30 A 'chocolate block' electrical connector and a bent bit of fencing wire did the job.
I gaffer taped the water shedder together - what is it there for? If the tailgate if left open in the rain?
