How many miles are TOO many ??

Following on from my previous thread. I've seen a couple on the Trader around the £15-£16K but the SE and HSE ones that I would like are all higher mileage 90k+ and I was wondering if as long as it had FSH and looked in good shape is there anything to worry about ?
I've had a look at a base model with 60k on the clock and it really is basic inside I know it would be just as capable BUT it just didn't feel as nice a place to sit.
I know I'm asking a lot for a lowish mile higher spec for the money I have so I'll just keep looking for now

Well for what it's worth, I sold my D3 when it was 3 years old with 75K on the clock and it still felt (& looked) like a nearly new car. Obviously it had FDSH with only the EGR valves requiring replacing under warranty.

Provided a service history is present, I would not be worried about high miles. Its proven that the 2.7 engine and gearbox will probably go for 400k miles without major mechanical problems.

The common areas that will need repeated replacements as miles rack up are suspension bushes. It seems to be common for the anti roll bar bushings, the rear upper wishbones, the front lower wishbones and steering ball jonts will all be prone to wear from 50k upwards depending on use.

Providing the car you buy has had the bushings done, and hopefully reassembled with copperslip to make the job easier the next time it needs doing, of its at or over 105 k or multiples thereof, make sure the timing belts are changed.

Mine is an 05 S manual that has done 90k. I've just the suspension etc re-bushed it, put new discs / pads front and rear, fitted a new compressor and had the clutch done 15,000 miles ago.

I was going to chop it in for a new D4 but decided that I would put the money into my pension and run mine for another 5 years. It just feels as good as new and apart from a flashy interior and a few engine tweaks its pretty much the same car as a D4 and certainly no less capable.

With the money I've saved I've had a De cat, Allisport Inter-cooler fitted and a BAS remap. If i didn't think it would do the mileage I wouldn't have done it. It purrs like the day I bought it.

As long as it's been looked serviced properly I wouldn't worry about mileage.

2 years 5 months and 61,000 miles. Still drives like new. Fully expect to keep this one into 6 figures
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Mine's almost run in, at 114000 miles Very Happy

The engine was getting a bit noisy recently, but now I've changed the aircon compressor, idler and tensioner pulleys, it's as quiet as a new one. So the engine, assuming the oil has been changed at least annually, should be good for a few hundred thousand miles. As previously stated, bushes and ball joints are the thing to check, but a decent indy can change these for not too much dosh Thumbs Up I've only had to do the rear roll bar bushes so far, but expect to do a few others sooner or later.

Where's "Character" when you need him - I understand he's well clear of 300,000 miles and closing on 400,000. So in his terms 90,000 is "just run in".

My HSE is on 116k, looks and drives as new, I know Paganuk is approaching 170k soon. As already mentioned, engine, geatbox etc are easily capable of well in excess of 400k.

Personally I would go for a SE or HSE as a min, they offer more toys and are plusher inside. All D3's are very capable on and off road, and are superb tow cars Thumbs Up

Yep, completely agree, the 105k service is expensive and if you're buying one with higher miles then you definitely want that doing.

The 105k service is well within the grasp of the average 'home mechanic' the real fiddly part is changing the rear HP fuel pump belt, not technical, just very fiddly.

The timing belt, and aux belt are quite easy (although any dealer will try their hardest to convince you otherwise)
the parts will cost you approx £130, quite a saving on around £900 at a dealers. 8)
