Will speak to Nick and see what magic he can work on the price!! Agreed, just cleaing the outside shouldn't have done much but it seems to have helped a lot. Could spend a small fortune on changing bits but have no effect. Might end up that full power up steep hills are to be avoided. I did think this morning that maybe the Beemer was a bit prem, but after the shutdown thoughts were maybe should have ordered xenons.
Beeeeeeeeeeeeemer Xenons are bright, especially to on coming traffic, even when correctly set. You've done the drivers of the Uk a favour Mark.

I borrowed a generic fault code reader off a chap at work yesterday, one of the things it does is display live data.
Some of the things were the MAP sensor pressure and air temperature, post intercooler
The former I saw go from 98kPa to 230kPa - approx. when driving. The air temperature was 27'c as against an ambient of abour 19/20'C
Anyone know whats normal?Mark.

I get 1-2C difference between external temp on instrument cluster and what I think is Temp at map sensor , using eco route dials on garmin nuvi! This was last weekend on trip Folkestone to London, difference increased when sitting in traffic before Blackwall tunnel. Only went as high as 19C and going up a long hill with speedcintrol on 90(late for booked euro train)pressure=1.6bar (100% engine load) is this possible? Running with new turbo and as good as you can clean a formally blocked IC(no sump guard plastic or Ali) A few mods... and keeping it all running...Faultmate MSV2

I (well OK TFC) changed my MAF sensor when it was reading 20c higher than ambient. New one reading correctly but didn't fix problem.

Hi DSL, update as requested: I have now done close to 1000 miles since MAP clean out. No further problems at all, and on a swift run into Birmingham last week from Essex, at motorway speeds whenever possible, 30mpg. It feels much more responsive and livelier, and I am pretty confident that the problem is solved. I cannot believe that a replacement MAP sensor is £138.00, I was thinking about carrying a spare, but I may revise that thought to carrying a Torx socket and a can of cleaner!
Just a further thought, my MAP sensor was actually diagnosed by LR Assists computor, and he also mentioned, as Gareth has suggested, that there is a correlation or link between the accelerator and the brake pedal, I may have this wrong, but it seems that a signal is sent to the engine management when the foot brake is in use, and the system then reduces the fueling /power 'cos it thinks you're slowing or stopping, and this is not unknown to get out of sync with it's self.

Very usefull what/which cleaner would you advise? And what did the LR assists propose new sensor or cleaning and could he explain why your D3 need new or cleaning of the MAp sensor? I got 33mph on the old make you feel good trip computor, from Fokestone to London(motor way speed) A few mods... and keeping it all running...Faultmate MSV2

This is sounding good!! Haven't used my car for a few days but have a long haul in 10 days or so. She's still shutting down with prolonged full throttle use but that's looking like the fuel filter (til it's ruled out ). Have a new MAP senor ordered with TLO, £138 + VAT, but considering what I've spent trying to get her working properly it's small beer. Will add cleaning MAP sensor to quarterly tyre kicking maintenance routine

DSL good to see you not incluiding "change the Turbo" in your tyre kicking maintenace regime How about a 2 step guide on how to clean the MAP sensor? So is the CAR(you can make a block buster by now) going to take all hope away of sunshine/heatwave forcasted for the weekend of cheering you up?A few mods... and keeping it all running...Faultmate MSV2

Step one:
Take body off chassis
OK, step one might be overkill!
Step 2:
Open bonnet
Step 3:
Take off oil filler cap
Step 4:
take off engine cover
Step 5:
Put oil filler cap back on
Step 6:
Get tool kit
OK, OK, I'm getting bored with steps. MAP sensor is in the middle with connector, see DM's pic. Small torx thingi,' undo screw, lift it out, it just pulls out with a small vacuum pop. Clean it (after taking pic) and put it back. Refitting reverse. 5 min job (including finding where SWMBO's hidden the tool kit) and very easy.

MAP sensor is circled (or ovaled)
Here's the offending sensor, I'll check it regularly but cleaning seems to have made a difference. Time will tell.

Saw the very similar post on discotr.es last night - I'll be doing this as soon as I get home tonight The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...
