My oil was changed and it made no difference to the notchy 1st - 2nd gear change I have, no doubt it has increased wear rate by changing early but I found it was still clonky,

I've found the XY sensor re calibration the best fix for my gearbox I do it about once a month now and it transforms the car completely !

Give this a try if you haven't already, and as for oil spec, I would be careful.

Another thanks for this right up, a few photo's makes it so much easier, took less than an hour and I like to take it slow to be sure about everything.

Just followed this excellent tutorial without a hitch....until I cracked the filler plug bolt (not me your honour, I blame the torque wrench). Anyone know where I can get a spare or if all ZFs are the same? Seen plenty of BMW ones via ebay but no Disco3 ones.

Cheers

I nearly rounded off my front and rear axle fill plugs.
I got new ones from advanced factors. Less than a quid each. Very Happy
They might do the gear box plugs too.

I just changed my oil and found my drain plugs weren't magnetic, is that normal? Also does anyone have the part number for replacement plugs?

Thanks

Just found this thread, very handy!! Thumbs Up Was looking at doing mine, although, I found a very small leak earlier, need to find out if it's gearbox, transfer box or engine... (Didn't even look at exactly wher it was coming from, but seemed to be front of gearbox/rear of engine...)

So, do I deduce that you can use 75/80 or 75/90 for the gearbox?

Manual Gearbox replacement plugs

Hi all.
This is a great write up the oil change for the manual gearbox to be honest I was looking hope trying to find out what oil to use every site reccomends a different oil.
The only problem I have had is trying to source the replacement filler plugs anyone know a site where these can be found?
Cheers.

Hi all,

Old thread I know but just working through some minor issues on my “new to me” 07 manual 122000 Miles. 1st and 2nd gear are very ‘notchy’ and especially when coming down the gears e.g approaching a junction, 2nd can be very difficult to engage. Seems worse when first driven before oil warmed up. Any ideas? gearbox oil change? Xy reset etc? I’ve already done the circlip (made no difference whatsoever) and I’m not having any issues with reverse or gear display, EPB etc. Clutch doesn’t slip.

Thanks, Adam

Well it’s got to worth a try.
I have to say though, I changed the oil in ours at 100,000 and it made no discernible difference, not that I had any issues to start with. Now at around 105,000.

Thanks jetmech, yeah not sure if it will help, but I guess good maintenance anyway. Will post the results when I get it done. Anyone know Is the xy sensor calibration only really for sorting the gear display issues, or worth a shot too?

So changed my gearbox oil tonight. Old oil was actually pretty clean, suggesting it has been changed relatively recently, I assume to tackle the ‘notchy’ gearbox. Therefore my change probably won’t make any difference either.

Only question I have is, should I have got a new filler plug? I put a new drain plug in but when I went to tighten the filler plug again it threaded in fine but just never really tightened up snug. Just kind of hand right. Is that normal?

Thanks
