Off to a reasonable start - an update 5 years on.

Well I have had my 2005 HSE D3 for about a month now and I've done a few basic mods.

As someone who has very little knowledge about maintenance of cars, let's alone a D3, I have done my first serious mod on my own. Are ou ready.... I upgraded my cup holders!!! Impressive stuff I hear you say Very Happy . I've also added some shiney chrome sill protectors thanks to Slimer and activated my tow bar electics (which I actually fitted myself!!) thanks to Bodsy, as well as him updating some of the software so I now have a clock on the message screen, a lights on indicator and reverse lights I can turn on from the Land Rover button. Fun to watch paniced faces as they think a car is reversing with no driver hehe.

So far so good.... What to do next hmmmmmm

Well I bought my D3 in May 2011. Have never worked on any car before... Note the before!!

Five years on I have done work on my D3 purely down to the help and support from this forum!! If this forum wasn't here, I wouldn't have learnt the things I have.

Since having my D3, I have bought various tools which have helped massively, so I've refurbished my suspension compressor, I have changed front and rear brake pads and discs, I've learnt how to do a basic service so oil change, fuel filter change, air and pollen filter change. I even changed my front rotary coupler / clock spring and did a guide how to do it!

I've changed the battery, changed the front drive belt, changed the alternator. I've done my rear ARB bushes and have the front to still do. I've blanked my EGR's and had the rear bumper off to replace the rear PDC loom and sensors....

I've also done some mods like de-tangoed lights, Narpy grill....

I can actually shove me head under the bonnet and know what I am looking at. I've even been able to do some work on other cars because I know realise if you can do a D3. Other cars seem simple in comparison!!

Anyway, anyone new to the forum who hasnt got a clue about what to do with these beasts, you can learn. I know my knowledge is still basic compared to many on the forum, but I never thought 5 years ago I would learn so much...

So don't be afraid to have a go and always ask for help if you get stuck. There are some extremely knowledgable people here who also freely give their help and advice.

To all who contribute to the forum, thank you and keep up the good work.

And Martin - thanks for setting up such a cracking site that really does have a 'community' spirit.

Think I may cry... Filling up ...... Need tissues!!!

Thumbs Up Very Happy

Well said that man! Thumbs Up

This is such an amazing place, filled with people that so readily offer their help, support and advice, to the point that someone like me feels able to tackle certain things.

Perhaps I will be writing something similar in 5 years.

Well said. After 11 years of owning my D3, it is the 10 years on here that has allowed me to keep it on the road. Nice to know that advice is simply a post or PM away.

Have to say, it is satisfying to know you have done a job yourself and dare I say it, we probably take more care as well than it going into a garage!!

My knowledge is still not that great in the overall scheme of things, but it's much better than it was thanks to this forum!! Thumbs Up

2007 Discovery 3 TDV6 XS Manual Stornoway GreyDiscovery 3

I'm a month into ownership after 4 dull years as a Freelander 2 owner where the most I maintenance I did myself was a starter motor refurb. Before that I had a 300tdi Disco that I had to tinker with constantly. I missed that.

In the past month I have been into every part of this forum and it has variously helped me and terrified me, but the advice has always been great and I've had my hands properly dirty and my swear box properly filled for the first time in ages.

I've bought my stickers. I'm in!
