Right ...ignore what i have said at the begining Shocked Embarassed

After inspecting this morning ...i have found that that the edge of the battery was wedged down the back arch ...and has pushed a little line out in the panel Rolling Eyes

So i have now made a crude ( but effective ) stand to put the battery on ..keeping it away from the rear panel

I have also added a wooden section so i can add some other bits that need mounting in there .

So ..not as neat as the first attempt ...but no creases in the body work Laughing

Would the 6 B&S i had on the old traxide install be big enough ?

Hi Wiggs and sorry for the delayed reply, I missed your post.

6B&S or 16mm2 would be fine.

So why not just fit it like I have, in the same place as in the D3:

Yes it's a bit of a tight squeeze and you have to move things around a bit, but it fits fine, only thing I moved out was the alarm sounder which I fixed to the same bracket as the FBH, which inturn makes it more audible - bonus Mr. Green .

Thanks Tony, since I took that picture I've also got the winch connected and relays etc all in the same area. Gonna have to try and take another picture this week of the current install and update the gallery with it Thumbs Up

What I have done in the past with mounting battery's in awkward places is do what the F1 seat fitting guys do,, get a tough bin liner or plastic bag and push it in to the position where you want to make the mounting, then just get yourself some expanding foam and squirt it in all the shapes and corners and let it do its job then you can trim the excess from it to suit. And it will be removable. It looks like this area needs it..

Flack Thumbs Up

Aren't the Gel ones sealed? So no vent?

Not wishing to rain on Ade's parade any further, but I've just spotted Bodsy's comment, (I must have skimmed over it first time round otherwise would have mentioned it before). Both the red and yellow tops are vented, I've circled them in the picture below, the only difference is that being Gel the contents isn't likely to spill out if tipped upside down or on it's side. Don't forget that batteries get warm when being charged so it only stands to reason they need to breath to allow for the expansion and contraction of their content.

Also, something that's not being discussed in this thread is that when siting a battery, consider what could happen in a crash scenario: the battery could be cracked and content spill out - hopefully not onto any passengers Confused

So although it's possible to fit in the boot area, I choose not to for those reasons. That said, I'm not saying it can't be achieve, just that I think it's less hassle to mount under the bonnet -even if you have to jiggle about the bits that LR in their wisdom have put in your way Laughing

Agree with what MrH said, the other thing to take into consideration is that if the emergency services needed to disconnect the battery they would not be expecting one in the boot as well - best to have the secondary battery fitted under the bonnet (as it is a well ventilated area) at least the fire brigade would be able to spot the extra wiring leading to it.

Woody I doubt that most fire men would look for a second battery, we normally just cut the first one and take it that thats everything sorted. Only time concerns would be raised is when power was found to still be on to some items.

I’m with Russell, no matter who would be working on the vehicle, whether it be emergency people after an accident or just workshop personal servicing the vehicle.

No one besides the owner would even consider looking for a second battery and this is based on years of experience with vehicles of all kinds, fitted with two batteries and this includes vehicles where the two batteries are under the bonnet but out in the open for all to see, like in a D1 or D2.

Furthermore, because of the way Optimas are constructed, Optimas do not “breath” while charging or discharging and will only vent if something is wrong. Also, if an accident does occur and is so serious that the battery is split in two, an Optima still won’t leak like an ordinary battery.

There is no reason why anyone considering fitting a battery as Wiggs has done, can not do it.
