Is much rather chance not having locking nuts on my car than the nightmare of A: trying to get them off when you break or lose the key, B: are stranded on the side of a busy motorway in the dark with a flat tyre that you can't change. I always bin the locking wheel nuts/bolts from our cars. More hassle than their worth. My old D1 had them. I could get them off with a stilson wrench. What's the point. If some thieving scumbag wants to try pulling the wheels off a 4x4 that's size good luck. I hope it squashes them in the process. Thumbs Up

Yes.

Nothing.

But, when was the last time you saw a car on bricks with the alloy wheels stolen from it?


You don't have to change them if you're worried about theft, and we reserve the right to say "we told you so" when (not if) the lockers fail. At the very least get rid of the original ones and get new ones from a LR dealer. That gives you 2 year warranty and it will include consequential damage, ie getting your wheels off. And replace those every just under 2 years.

Just like to say thanks to the contributors to this thread, I recently had a problem removing one of my locking wheels nuts and without this thread I think I would have struggled.

In a nutshell:
1) Ditch all the locking wheel nuts
2) Ditch all the original nuts with caps.

Had the exact same problem on my 2010 D4 of the spinning locking cap, used this site a lot in the past so in case it helps anyone in the same predicament I did eventually manage to get it off. I had tried the various options posted here including the washer trick, hammering on various sized sockets but it didn't budge and lost half the nut in the process.

Eventually what did it for me much to my relief was a standard 14mm Sealey screw extractor (£50 set on Amazon). Once it had bitten it took all of my weight on a hefty breaker bar to move it so no surprise the locking nut didn't stand a chance. Also no surprise I have now replaced all the locking nuts plus the swollen standard ones with some nice forum recommended parts. Smile

This is my son's disc 3. Another approach to removing locking wheel nut. I cut the chrome cap off, no matter what I tried locking wheel nut tools, socket hammered on nothing moved it. It just kept striping more metal off and getting smaller. After hours I was about to give up and try welding on a new nut head. Then I had a eureka moment, there’s a washer under the nut head. Have you guest? I used a 20mm hole saw in an electric drill, it took less than 2 minutes the washer protects the wheel from hole saw. The nut head literally popped off. This locking nut was a different nut to the other three just my luck.
