Gearknob removal - manual tx

As in title I need to remove the gearknob to replace the leather gaitor that has split, any ideas how?

I tried turning it but the whole lever turns with it.

I know on the Auto you just pull it up but anyone know for a manual please?

i remeber following 90BHP in his D3 once with TFC as shotgun

next thing TFC's left arm out passenger window with the manual gear lever in his hand
dead funny and nearly crashed into the back of him as eyes watering
so cant be that difficult if removed on the move Laughing
