BTW the comparison took place in Europe on the way to Morocco.
The JE car basically left the TC car standing even though the TC car was moving faster when the test started.

Should also mention that the silver JE car (that doesn't change gears by itself) left the black TC (that changes gears by itself) car standing when it came to powering up the hills, not sure how hard the black car was trying though....

It is obviously very gratifying to hear of relative success of a JE product relative to a competitor . Both in this thread and the one about "seems to be OK now, buying another" (or whatever it is) the JE tune appears to have advantages.
What seems odd to me is that there is an implication that the TC tune was both more smokey and less powerful . With the depth of knowledge we have here I would suggest that this might mean that there was either some other minor fault on the 'TC' car, or it might have had air filter problems. As regulars will know JE strongly recommends the ITG product, but even they can get blocked if the right contaminants are applied liberally enough. Another possible cause might be that the intercooler of the 'TC' car had more dirt on the outside leading to less good cooling performance.
So firstly, was the 'TC' car runing a K&N air filter (these block up quite quickly and need regular servicing to perform well) ?
Secondly, is or was the 'TC' intercooler blocked up with insects, leaves, sandwiches, small boys ???
Thirdly, in the cause of science (really !) we would be happy to fit a JE tune to the 'TC' car, and let the regular driver of the car decide if he thinks it is better or worse or much the same.

We all ran ITG filters on the way down but I think we were all on standard LR paper filters on the way back, at least two or more of these where changed (not for the first time) just before leaving Africa so air-flow should have been good for the 1500 mile or so run home (which reminds me, must give my ITG a clean and get it back in).
Never easy to tell how clear the intercoolers are, especially with winches fitted (which restrict airflow enough on their own) but the radiators were surprisingly clear so hopefully the intercoolers weren't too bad

I ran paper filters there and back, had a good look at the intercooler last weekend when I stripped my winch out - took a good two hours with the hosepipe to clean it out...
I do suspect that Ken may have an engine DTC that is causing the smoke, as I mentioned, I cleared one relating to the air intake sensor and the smoke was dramatically reduced for Freelander 2 Diesel, Discovery 3 / RR Sport TDV6 & RR Sport TDV8, Defender (TD5 & Puma) - available Now!

I take it you used the autologic thingy then? Are they easy to use and are they expensive to buy? DS3 TDV6 HSE

not sure about the price, the LR IDS is £8k, so the Autologic should be cheaper... it's not as comprehensive as IDS and there are two versions i'm aware of (Vince has the cheaper, restricted one) If I was going to spend £5k upwards, i'd go for the LR product, even with the annual upgrade charge
The autologic is missing lots of peripheral but useful stuff like full DTC mapping, datalogging and the ability to enter engineering codes - assuming you can get them for Freelander 2 Diesel, Discovery 3 / RR Sport TDV6 & RR Sport TDV8, Defender (TD5 & Puma) - available Now!
