Unable to select reverse gear on manual 6 speed gearbox
I promised a couple of chaps that I would post the outcome of my problem, so here you go....
Quick summary:- Gearstick baulking and going into first, with or without the engine running. Independent LR Specialist quoted £2000 for the box and £1000 to fit it!!!!!
After reading a couple of posts on different forums I thought I would look into the “circlip†problem further.
I took my D3 to a local one man band garage who said he had heard about the problem but had never repaired one, he also agreed to take a few pics! He told me that after a bit of routing around he found the problem which was indeed a broken circlip on the Detent Spring Assy.
From what I understand this is what he did:-
1) Take off O/S/F wheel.
2) Remove gearbox centre mounting and lower box onto cross member.
3) Remove Detent Spring Assy bung with 14mm hex wrench.
4) Extract Spring Assy and replace broken circlip.
5) Reverse steps 1-3.
The total cost was £115.20!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This was labour only as the replacement circlip was modified from one he had in stock. I guess you should really replace the whole Detent assy ( I bet ZF don’t just sell the clip!)
A big thank you to Dave Stockley of Village Vehicles in Kimpton, Hertfordshire. (A man I’m told who has forgotten more about Land Rovers than most of us know!)
See pics in my gallery.
Nev. If it's not difficult, it's not worth doing!

just to understand this, the engine/gearbox or gearbox/ propshaft was not disconnected. it was just by removing the support of the cross member allowed the box to drop and get access to the plug?

CG,
Yes. As it was explained to me all the chap did was remove the mounting block and this lowered it enough to get access to the plug!
MartinR,
Yes I was also wondering where the remaining bit of clip went!!!!!! No crunching noises so far.If it's not difficult, it's not worth doing!

No it was sarcasm at the post above me referring to their d3 as a jeep. If it was a jeep they wouldnt be on here hence my question.
