I'm trying not to HiJack another thread where tlt suggested:-
Quote:
I have mentioned numerous times in posts that the diff and transfer case fluids should be changed more frequently than LR suggests, to squeeze all possible life out of them. I suggest every 20k (miles).
I'm not an engineer, but do papmer my Disco3 - oil & filter changes every 7.5k miles etc..
I am inclined to agree with tlt's suggestion but would appreciate comments.
My D3's warantee expires at the end of next month with 33k miles on the clock, what should I be looking for in a pre-end of warrantee check?

LR standard schedule is every 150k for transfer box and non-locking diffs, every 75k for locking diffs. I got all mine and the gearbox done at 75kThe End

Just about to get mine done at 75K. Don't think the front one has to be, but my rear diff is locking and it makes sense to me to do all three every 75K.
If you want to pamper it, if you haven't got the new style breather cap fitted to your front diff that doesn't get blocked so easily then get one of those!

I changed the front and rear diff oils at 40,000 miles (granted the car was 5 1/2 yrs old then), certainly the front diff oil looked watery and discoloured compared with the rear,(probably a sign of impending doom ) and both had a fair amount of metallic 'fuzz' on the mag plugs. I do think 75k is too long TBH. Transfer box oil was changed by dealer at previous service,so I didn't see the condition of that.
I assume that I have the new style breather cap bearing in mind it's one of the last D3s - registered March '09.
I think I'll leave the oil change for a year until about 45k.
Similarly gearbox oil (manual).
Thanks for comments so far.

You should change every 20k miles or 32k Km. The moisture will get into the box, and if you wait too long, rust will form on the bearings. As a result, they disintegrate. You can monitor for moisture contamination at this interval, and adjust accordingly.
I've had a ton of these disassembled and most have rust in them.

Well a blocked breather will cause that - hot diff meets cold water and either sucks in air from the breather or water through the oil seals...
Changed both front and rear diff oils last week 93k on clock coming up to 7 years old, dropped the oil and it looked very clean hardly any sludge on the plug so wondered if it had already been done prior to purchase but know its clean oil in there now so one less thing to worry about.
Bought recommended oil from stealers SA OX think that's wwhat it was but at just short of £44 got two litres I was a bit cheesed off when I started to put the new oil in and noticed on the side of the bottle 75W 90, can get a gallon for just over £15 so I ask is there any difference in the two. Now , should i cut diff breather pipe at an angle with a lower side towards the rear of the vehicle or towards the front?or it does not matter ? instructions does not specify that...just curious
Based upon the instructions, it appears the tube needs to be cut with the angle to the rear. That way when the new elbow fitting is fit to the modified pipe, the pipe opening faces the opening of the newly applied elbow.
