Rough and difficulty starting
This morning:
Fired up the FBH fifteen minutes before starting with the BAS remote.
3 degrees when switched the car on.
Car turned over fine.
But car shaking/juddering, and battery light flashing, unable to rev.
Switched car off then on again, still the same.
Then disappeared after about five seconds.
Then has been fine.
Any ideas? No obvious fault codes. New and alternator battery this year.
Glow plugs?

It has been mentioned previously on here that some D3s suffer from this issue after using the remote FBH. The theory apparently is the ECU uses coolant temperature to determine the fueling and glow plug burn time rather than the oil temperature (or ideally both!). So you have a relatively cold engine, but fully warmed up coolant, tricking the car into thinking it's fully warmed up.
This doesn't explain why not all D3's exhibit this problem though. Some people rave about how more easily it starts when they use their remote FBH Dennis

Same here. After a 15 min run of fbh there is enough heat in the system for it to decide that you don't need the glow plugs however there hasn't been enough time for the heat to conduct from the water jacket into the combustion chamber to create decent combustion on start up, it then runs like a pig for a moment. When it starts to get chilly it needs the full half hour ideally, mine starts even better if I start it say 10 mins after fbh has finished as more heat has travelled to the combustion chamber even though water temp has cooled a bit.

Thanks, what I'll do tomorrow is not use the FBH, and start it 'cold'. The day after I'll run the FBH for the full 30 mins then wait 10 mins before starting.
However, does this still indicate a glow plug issue somewhere?

I'm my experience the FBH will take the temperature to somewhere between the blue of cold and normal running in 30 mins
This was always enough for a smooth start even though the glowplugs were almost certainly dead
So I wonder if there is a deeper issue here or maybe the FBH just wasn't on long enough ?
The glowplug circuit is easy enough to check if you have an electrical multimeterIllegitimi Non Carborundum

Deffo glow plugs - had the same, I now give it a double dose of remote FBH if it's really cold.

Perhaps.
How do you check them with a meter?

If it starts OK without prior use of the FBH then I guess that suggests the glow plugs are generally good, so nothing to worry about.Clive

you may only reveal duff glowplugs if a few have gone and its below 0 deg C
a previous D3 of mine used to start fine above freezing with 6 plugs out
and now (hopefully LittleG !) starts fine after 20 mins of FBH preheatIllegitimi Non Carborundum
