Strange engine noise ( tdv6 )

Right I have a strange one here. I have a ticking sound coming from what sounds like the front off side of the engine. It dose not sound like it's there when the engine is cold and only appears to happen once the engine is up to temp. The sound ether stops or gets quieter when you lift the rpm up to 1500rpm and dose not sound like it gets faster or slower with rpm.

I have had a well known mobile Land Rover specialist that frequents this forum to take a look and he has never came across this issue.. I have removed the aux belt to rule out all the pumps and tensioners. Disconnected the egr's and changed oil and filters. None of which has given me a clue to what's causibg the sound. Next thing is to open the timing cover to see if there's anything wrong behind there even tho it dose not sound like a tensioner.

It dose not sound like a bottom end knock as its to quiet and more of a tick than a knock and it dose sound like its ticking in cycle with the engine.

Anyone got any ideas?

My cam belt was starting to shred and was making a strange ticking noise

Two mechanics including me had a look at it and we were convinced it was a cam follower

I removed the cam cover and found this

I came across a thread maybe yours that said that. That's why I am going to remove the cover. It's had its belts done last year so would be surprised if the belts going like yours.

Did yours get affected by heat or rpm?

It did sound like a noisy tappet, and the belts have been replaced previously...

My belts were changed 18 months ago, the only fault I could find that could have caused the belt to shred was the idler pulley before the right hand cam shaft sprocket had very slight play in it, this possibly caused the belt to move of center so it was rubbing against the up stand on the right hand cam sprocket

My tick wasn't often enough to be a follower or small end, and when I found the split in the belt it explained the slow frequency of the tick as split had further to travel around all the pulleys, if that makes sense

Worth checking the belt to rule it out Thumbs Up

I thought it was a noisy follower on mine and so did the other mechanics including a LR mechanic

This one maybe something different but it's worth checking the belt first Thumbs Up

Would tend to agree but would think it would make the noise all the time if it was a tappet/lifter.

Will try and get the cover of over the weekend and see what I find

Chain guides and or tensioners? Common on double over head camshafts 1 pulley engines were in low pressure situation (idle, warm engine) chains moves and creates the ticking sound.

it can't be a chain moving as there is only a belt. If it is a lifter dose that require surgery or can it be left. If it fails will it destroy my engine? Java Black Banging Head

It's a double overhead camshaft - 2 cams within each cylinder head of the V6 - total 4 cam shafts

The cam belt drives the first cam shaft and within the cam cover a chain powers the second cam shaft - the chain tensioner can fail and was something I was considering when diagnosing my tick

Mike will hopefully give you advice on changing the hydraulic followers as I never got that far - they aren't that expensive

The cam belt drives one pair of cam shafts, which in turn drives the second pair of cam shafts, via chains, EDIT....as said above ^^ these, or the tensioners can fail Rolling Eyes ....If you suspect 'lifter' noise and it is not excessive, it could go on for ever ( well, as long as the engine lasts Laughing ), it won't destroy the engine, although there are a few other items that might. Whistle
 D3 owned from new, P017 brake recall, BAS FBHIC, new FBH, LR013487 oil pump, new water pump. RRS front lower suspension arms. New suspension compressor/ relay. New Denso alternator. CuNifer rear brake pipes. New GKN rear propshaft. New HPFP belt & tensioner. New A/C Condenser.NO WARRANTY for many many years.

It might be worth checking the bearings in the roller cam followers for excessive play.

If it gets bad enough, the roller disintegrates and sends what is left of the needle bearings through the engine.

The cam chain tensioner would be another place to look. Notorious on VW and Audis, not so much on these LRs from what I've seen.

Well after a lot of digging about, removing parts and banging my head of a brick wall I found out wat my problem was.

It turned out to be the oil pump clicking, possibly the pressure release valve so quick call to our friendly and helpful mobile disco specialist disco Mikey to arrange a visit for him to change the pump and timing belt at the same time.

Few hours later and it was done. The man dose not hang about.

I had a tappet type nose that would come and go, more so when engine was warm. My answer was EGR valve. Even though they where blacked they were still trying to function. I only found out when I on pluged them and it stopped. Hope this might help Thumbs Up
