Hi Mick. You know me, always tinkering with something.
I decided to get this new one because of its physical size, as it fits neatly in to the aperture without using a mount. This one can also switch on/off with the ignition rather than messing around with the button on the device.
Another bonus is that it is not live, does not have bluetooth, does not have voice control, cannot play Mp3 files, cannot display photos etc etc, nice and simple
Only thing is, I now have a year old Go Live 750 to get rid of.
I played around with the glovebox switch as we discussed, and it would appear the supply is ignition controlled but must become live when the car wakes up, ie I unlocked the car and it was live, that must be the way fuse 58 works
Hello. That looks really good. Can i please ask how does it start and switch off with ignition. does it need any special switch . am really bad at doing all this. Any advise would be welcome. Am just across the border in Dumfries and driving to St. andrews tomorrow. My son is attending the open day.
Thanks

Hi Dr SS.
You dont need any special switch, I just fitted a switch in the top glove box so I could isolate the power if I wanted to.
This new Tomtom Start 60 has a box in the menu that you tick, which shuts down the sat-nav. It starts up as soon as it detects power, and you can specify either to shut down or not, when power is lost. When you stop the car it displays a screen which gives a 10 sec countdown for the unit to shutdown, you then get the option to cancel that shutdown or just leave it.
Its great because you dont have to access the button on the back of the unit which is just as well, because its inaccesible when the unit is in place. It also means the sat-nav is fully automatic
You are very welcome to drop in and see it if you are passing by

I am also looking to retrofit Sat Nav to my 55 D3 - I am currently looking around at which is best fit!
Are Fascia adapter plates available for aftermarket sat Navs??
The TomTom Start 60 has excellent reviews, and is reasonably priced.
I'm very tempted to replace my 3 year old TomTom, which I brought because the OEM SatNav is so poor.
I must resist the temptation...
The installation looks excellent - congratulations.

Many thanks for all the info. Unfortunately the open day finished late and had a rather long drive. Good luck to you anyway. Once I have the tomtom shall post pics.

No problem
Just for your info, I fitted mine using a little bluetack at the top and another little bit on the bottom of the unit and then pushed the bottom in, which in turn pushes the top into the little recess at the top. I then trimmed the rubber mat to allow the edges to slide under the curved bottom of the unit which also prevent the bottom of the unit moving forward.
The unit fits in tightly and is rock solid without using the fitted mount. Also it can be easily removed for updating on your PC, and refitted in minutes with a bit of fresh bluetack
Hi again. Must say you have done a lovely job. Looks gorgeous. One more question--- the power to the unit comes from the cigarette lighter ??. And does the charging cord comes with the satnav. The bluetack idea is brilliant in its simplicity.
Cheers

I fitted a cigar lighter socket behind the bottom glovebox. This socket if fed from fuse 58 via a piggyback fuseholder. The power cord for the sat-nav plugs into this socket. The socket only becomes live when you open the door and the car "wakes up" and the socket loses power when the car goes to sleep after you lock it.
I only fitted a switch in the top glovebox for my last sat-nav as it did not switch on and off with the ignition, you had to use the on/off switch on the unit itself. This one doesn't really need a separate switch

A lot of guys on here have fitted the sat-nav surround from a D4 and it looks good, but I think it is more suited to a normal 4.3 " screen. The one I have fitted is 6" which is a LOT clearer and easier to use and see
