Disco 3 TDV6 engine failure
This week the engine on my Disco 3 broke down. The vehicle has done only 116,000 Km. Vehicle is out of warranty. From the first inspection I was told the crank broke. How do you break a crank? Vehicle had all the services done and cambelts and tentioner pulleys replaced. Quote from LR to repair is R247,000 - not possible. I also understand that from 2008 models onwards the crank was replaced with a "stronger" crank. Is this the case? Does anyone know if the crank had known issues and if there was a new crank in the later models (after 2007). What do I do now? Can you overhaul the engine or do I replace the engine? Can I lodge a complaint with LR or am I wasting my time? Please help. I'm desperate. I thought I bought a reliable vehicle?

Hi Johan_324
sorry to hear about your mishap. Yours is one of a rapidly growing number of engine failures on the TDV6.
Get hold of TGWInduna on the land rover section of the 4x4community forum (in SA). He can assist you further.
You can also contact "thegasman" on the same forum, who successfully "convinced" LR to carry the cost of a similar failure.

Hi George,
Thanks for all the information. From reading through all the threads I realised this is definately a problem with the TDV6 engines. Unfortunately you do not read all these threads befor buying a vehicle, and now I'm stuck with no vehicle. I'm waiting for LRSA to let me know if they are willing to assist. I will definately get hold og "Thegasman" to get more information on the process he followed to replace his engine.

Hi guys
here are some pics of the bearing damage on the TDV6.
The other half of the thrust washer incorporated into the main bearing half shown in the picture was deposited as metal filings and particles in the sump, the rest well judge for yourself
The big end bearing halfs were very interesting, where the centre portion of the bearing has been distorted (sqashed/worn thin) due to excessive bearing wear and following on from that a loose fit which caused the engine.

Hi hgbosch,
So why do we see so many engines with the same type of failure? Is this a design flaw in the engine or does the engine fail due to bad driving and "wrong" maintenance?
How do you fix a engine like this? Do you get parts to replace or do you have to buy a full sub-assembly?

The bearing damage is due to a lack of lubrication. We suspect that it is a progressing situation from a multitude of cold starts with insufficient lubrication, which then leads to progressive and ultimate bearing failure.
This can manifest itself just in a severe bearing knock, or a broken conrod or worst case scenario a snapped crank. In points 2 and 3 the result is an engine seizure.
Contact Peter from Landyworx (0117810020). They do have a fix to prevent this from happening, as long as abnormal bearing wear is not yet present in the engine. To establish this in the first place, they take an oil sample and analyze it. Their lab is 5 minutes from their workshop.
Trust that this helps.EX AFRICA SEMPER ALIQUID NOVI

Hi Johan
so far no parts are available for this engine. But there are efforts underway to come up with a solution. Speak to Peter from Landyworx, he has done a lot of work on this front.EX AFRICA SEMPER ALIQUID NOVI
