Service Cost & replacement keys
Hi All
New owner - be gentle!
Wondering if anyone can confirm what I'm hearing, because searching on here it would seam its fairly easy to get a spare key programmed - but calling around everyone is saying its dealer only? I have a MY2008 - did something change?
Also, Just been calling around for servicing costs. Is it worth using a land rover specialist, over a standard garage for routine servicing? somewhere like servicingstop.com is in the region of £200 for a major service compared to £400 for the local land rover specialist. They are both changing oil and filters - what more am I gaining? I understand repairs are probably better done at a specialist though.
Thanks!

Hiya and welcome
I'd prefer to get my servicing done by someone who knows Discoveries inside out. I'm relying on them to be able to spot things that are not right that may not necessarily be on the servicing schedule.
Keys can be reprogrammed by someone who has the right tools - Faultmate MV or GAP IID Pro (possibly not the only ones). All keys need to be present and at least one key needs to be able to start the car. Additional keys need to be new/blank, you can't use old keys that were not assigned to the vehicle originally.
Near you is Geoff. (with a full stop, you'll need a few more posts to PM him but he may be a long soon). Where in Kent are you?
Also if you fill out your profile with model, gearbox/fuel, year (MY not registration year) etc it helps those in the know

Hi! Thanks for the reply! (and welcome)
I've filled in the "My Land Rover Profile"...
So the MY doesn't affect key programmability? I'm in Whiststable - I've found a spare key supplier (blanks, unprogrammed) for £35 odd (not bought yet, ebay). But Geoff. might be able to supply that too? Would be great if he saw this, as dealer has quoted £254 odd!! I have only one key though, hence the desire for a spare.
I was thinking of using either Land Rover Solutions (Canterbury) or Stuart Gilbert Land Rover (Sittingbourne). Does anyone have any comments on them or recommendations in my area?

I would get a guarantee that the key is returnable should it not be programmable. AFAIK there is no outside-of-LR source for blank keys so I would be wary at that price.06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

Additional keys have to be ordered from a main dealer as the key is coded to the VIN at the factory, others have purchased the blank unprogrammed keys from Ebay and they have failed to work.GAP IID Pro Multi Vehicle Defender L316 2007-2015 - Discovery 3 - Discovery 4 - Discovery Sport L550 - Freelander 2 - Range Rover Evoque L538 - Range Rover L322 - Range Rover L405 - Range Rover Sport L320 - Range Rover Sport L494 Electrical Fault Diagnostics

£35 seems too inexpensive to be true - do you have a link, a spare fob without ability to turn the ignition would be handy to give to people you don't necessarily want to drive but let them into the car.
Dealer will be supplying the OEM unit and they come from the factory cut for the car. A member by name of 'The Large One' is the parts guy at Yeovil and he may be able to quote a price. You'll need the V5 and it will have to match the delivery address.
I've had one key for 3 years, I think if I had two I would have lost one by now :-/

OK, so I'm getting mixed messages here again! Is there an old system that can be programmed and new one that cannot? Because the people I called kept asking the year and saying something about it being a BMW key that cannot be done.
This is the key, he says he has local locksmiths using them successfully in my messages to him. Note seller has high and good feedback.

Forget the Ebay keys as they will NOT work
Try a search, this has been covered numerous times http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic102883.htmlGAP IID Pro Multi Vehicle Defender L316 2007-2015 - Discovery 3 - Discovery 4 - Discovery Sport L550 - Freelander 2 - Range Rover Evoque L538 - Range Rover L322 - Range Rover L405 - Range Rover Sport L320 - Range Rover Sport L494 Electrical Fault Diagnostics

Trouble with feedback is it against the seller and not the product. So he might be very good at selling something else.
update: he has plenty of negative feedback about keys not fitting, being cut or not programmable.

Thanks
Yes I did search but there are so many threads on it, with differing statements, it's hard to know who is correct.
If I understand correctly then, the key must be sourced from the dealer because it needs to be pre-coded to the VIN. After that, faultmate et al can "link" it to your car for things like central locking?
This key then, if programmed, would be good for just about everything (once programmed) apart from actually starting the car - a posh valet key if you will.
Next question then... am I looking at £250 wherever I go or are there any friendly dealers with discounts for forum members?!
Any recommendations on Kent based servicing specialists?

IIRC the key should cost between £130 - £150 plus the dealers labour rate to complete the learn new key procedure.
A friendly forum member with MSV2 could enable the key for you.GAP IID Pro Multi Vehicle Defender L316 2007-2015 - Discovery 3 - Discovery 4 - Discovery Sport L550 - Freelander 2 - Range Rover Evoque L538 - Range Rover L322 - Range Rover L405 - Range Rover Sport L320 - Range Rover Sport L494 Electrical Fault Diagnostics

Thanks, I'll get Geoff's case and see if he fits that description!
