Today i collected my New / Old car, a D3 XS 2.7td Auto Leather 57 plate. I originally owned it from new in 2007 but credit crunched it in Dec 09. Always wanted it back.
Anyway, spotted it on autotrader and had to buy it back... so it did! Its just like its never been away and i drove it home today.
It has a full LRSH and due its MOT in Sept. However it does need a few things done if you have any advice, that would be great.
1) I need 4x new tyres - just for general road use about 8k a year. Any recommendations. It will need aligned at the same time as the rear drivers side has some additional wear on the inside. Will a regular tyre fitter be able to do this - or is this dealer only?
2) Last MOT had an advisory for offside front track rod end ball joint - slight play. Is this a big job? Aprox price including parts?
3) Rear brakes - advisory of 2/3000 miles. Again, big job / aprox price?
4) External RUST - Seems that there is an awful lot of surface rust underneath - spare tyre is rusty as is the frame of the vehicle. Seems common on D3s, but any suggestion of treatment / cure / cost?
5) Internal RUST - Rear seat brackets and under the front seats - the metal has patches of rust. Any suggestions?
6) Occasional smell of burning diesel when car is stationary - no obvious exhaust leaks/noise.
7) Warranty - Who currently receives the best reviews from disco3.co.uk? Warranty Direct?
Thanks for your patience in my 'newbie' questions, I am reading all the forums too to try and discover the answers too.
Needless to say the PERMAGRIN was installed on me, the wife and the 3 weans!

Cool you got it back!
I'd just sand and repaint the interior rusted pieces. For the undercarriage, maybe a rust converter spray would do the trick.17 Discovery 5 HSE Si6, Fuji White on brown | 07 LR3 SE 4.4 Java Black on Alpaca

I think you need to go and see Disco_Mikey at Strathearn with that list, although the brakes are easy enough to do yourself, look at bodsy's brake bible in his signature block.Joined the BMWX5 45e group

1) Tyres - check the web for something that suits your needs, as far as wear goes, it may be worn bushes so have that checked before you pay for 4 wheel alignment which would be better done by someone with a Hunter laser set up or similar who can put car into tight tolerance mode or a good specialist
2) Track rod ends - easy/cheap DiY but again do them before alignment
3) Brakes - again relatvely easy/cheap DIY job
4 & 5) get into it with a wire brush, Kurust or similar and some waxoyle - brush or spray, again cheap and easy!
6) probably your FBH as said before in our recent low temperatures
7)no opinion
Overall, the rust you can do yourself and get job satisfaction out of it, the mechanical stuff is easy enough too BUT if you're not confident seek out a recommended Indie, again as above Disco-Mikey and Strathearn are excellent and will check the car over properly and advise accordingly

Re: Its back home now! (after 3 years!)
Tyres are a personal preference. What works for someone else may not work for you. Andy @ AJS is probably the man to talk to
After a wheel alignment, the steering angle sensor should be recalibrated. Make sure the garage doing the work can do this too
If the car needs a track rod end, it will need aligned again. Have it done before, or at the same time as the tyres so you are onlt paying for 1 alignment
Rear brakes are not difficult if you know your way around a spanner. Prices for parts vary greatly, but so does quality, so buy carefully
External rust can be treated with a good dose of waxoyl, or stonechip
Interior rust will need to be treated and repainted. Try and find the cause of the rust firstly, it may point to a water leak inside the car
This diesel smell is probably only rhe FBH working away, though check for obvious fuel leaks first
Black Horse warranties appear to be one of the better companies to deal with, though chexk the warranty section of the forum for a more comprehensive reply My D3 Build Thread
Awesome guys, thanks! Overall the car is fab and I knew most of these things were needing or usually need done. Disco_Mikey. Ill drop you a PM later on
Glad to be back! Happy Easter!

No bother. May not pick it up until tomorrow, as I promised the wife a full day of my undivided attention (which means no D3 )My D3 Build Thread

Hi,
Who does the waxoyl really in Scotland that someone can recommend? Not got confidence at mo but old discovery had problem with rust underneath before. Many thanks
John
the ball joint I was quoted £75 from an independent supplied and fitted. if just the brake pads then I think they are about £30 off AF and easy to fit. or should I say I managed to fit mine and I am most certainly not a mechanical person

Perhaps Andy has fitted them in the intervening 2 or so years.
