Pleased that it looks like it’s going to work out financially. Also very good news that no one got hurt.

Very scary though that a LR dealer should either be ignorant, or uncaring, of the danger into which they were putting the vehicle's occupants, and other road users.

Letter to dealer...

22nd February 2007

Dear XXXXX

Without Prejudice

Ref: Land Rover Discovery 3 TDV6, Reg: XXX XXXX

I purchased this vehicle on 1st September 2005. When I ordered the vehicle, I took several dealer options, including a cosmetic enhancement package costing around £5000, which included colour-coding, stainless steel side tubes and 22” Kahn alloy wheels and tyres.

Overall I have been very pleased with the car, and the few issues I have had were dealt with swiftly and professionally by your team. I have come to expect a high standard of service from your group, having previously used XXXXX for servicing and repairs on my previous Land Rover.

However, since purchasing the vehicle, I have been plagued with unexplained flat tyres, which have then resulted in damaged rims. The first time one of the rims became distorted, you replaced it under warranty, and the second time I made an insurance claim. 2 weeks ago this happened yet again, swiftly followed by my wife getting a puncture, leaving me without a spare, as I’d not managed to get the previous flat tyre sorted out (the tyre itself had become damaged in the process, and needed replacing). When the vehicle was recovered to Hillendale, I was informed that the car had damaged rims yet again. I mentioned all the problems these wheels and tyres had caused me, and asked if there was a possibility of swapping them in for a less “fragile” set. I was given the option to BUY a set of Range Rover Sport wheels and tyres, with delivery mileage, for £1000 + VAT. Faced with the option of this, or considerably more for replacement 22” Kahn’s and tyres, I felt I had little option but to accept.

I have since sought expert advice (from Land Rover UK and from a Michelin tyre specialist) regarding the wheels and tyres I was originally sold, and those I have now been sold as a replacement. The handbook clearly states that a load rating of 111 (equivalent to 1090kg) is recommended by Land Rover. The tyres on the 22” wheels supplied have a load rating of 102 (850kg) – 22% below the recommended rating, and those on the Range Rover Sport wheels have a load rating of 107 (975kg).

This is quite obviously the cause of all the unexplained flat tyres. I should point out that the car is not used off-road, and never mounts kerbs, etc.

Furthermore, the Range Rover Sport wheels are fitted with a “50” profile tyre, meaning that the rolling diameter is 1” smaller than the size specified for the vehicle. This means that speedometer and mileage readings will be incorrect (reading around 3% over), and the overall gearing of the car will be incorrect, causing potential wear in components.

Additionally, I have been advised that, should I be involved in an accident, my insurance company would be within their rights to dismiss any claim, as the tyres are not of a sufficient weight rating for the vehicle.

I believe your team acted in good faith, but the fact is that I have now paid twice for wheels fitted with tyres which are below the correct specification for the vehicle. In the case of the Kahn’s, I have paid a considerable sum for wheels and tyres which are useless to me (it is not possible to obtain tyres of high enough weight rating to my knowledge, and at least 2 of the rims are now damaged beyond safe use), and in the case of the Range Rover Sport wheels, the tyres fitted are not correct in size or weight rating (although it should be possible to obtain these, I believe).

I regret to inform you, therefore, that I shall be seeking financial reimbursement for the Kahn wheels and tyres, along with the provision of a set that are correctly suited to the vehicle. The Range Rover Sport wheels are fine, but would need to be fitted with the correct tyres.

I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.

Yours sincerely,

What do you think???

Sounds good to me Mr B. but I would also ask for compensation for the puncture repairs and replacement wheels.

Mr B..Don't put 'I regret to inform you' ...this shows that you are 'sorry' and could be seen by them as a sign of weakness. You are in the driving seat....be firm ..but fair Wink

Maybe put something like " I am left with no alternative at this time but to seek....." etc etc

I would be even more to the point and just say something like "I am therefore seeking financial...etc etc"

Nevertheless a well written letter, Mr Bling!

Overall, I think it looks like a comprehensive letter. I would also claim for not just the original wheels and tyres, but for any replacement tyres you have had to buy (due to punctures), your insurance Excess when you had to claim, along with any differentiating increase in the resultant loss of No claims (or at least the relevant increase at renewal time).

I would also state that you were specifically "not made aware" that there would be the differences in Rolling road etc when you purchased.

If you really wanted to be petty, you could also factor in the increase in fuel costs due to the lower MPG with those wheels But I think that's taking it too far...! Smile

From a picky gramatical point of view

I'd replace one of the words Previously with something else.... Wink

But I thinkit should get you the result you're after. Are you sending it to the LRCS or just the Dealer principle?

UPDATE:

I have to thank Hillendale for exemplary customer service. The Managing Director called me and has sorted out my situtation to my full satisfaction. Not only have they provided me with a brand new set of 19" HSE wheels and tyres, they have also compensated me for my losses and inconvenience (It would be improper for me to go into exact financial details on a public forum)

Big "Thank You" to Hillendale!
