Reconditioned engine advice |
|
Hi all
I am a long term reader of this forum ,(lurking in the shadows)but I have just had a reason to rejoin after forgetting my old password.
We have a 56 plate xs ,we have had since new ,with full service history that has lost compression on one piston
I have spoken to the very helpful chaps at The Green oval garage today and they saying it needs a new engine.I have read on here over the years of the warnings about recon engines. So has anybody had or heard of any dealings with either of these two on E bay
A1enginesuk
Globalengines1
They have good feed back. The prices advertised are more realistic to spend on a 6 year old car.Any guidance on research into these companies would be gratefully received.
Thanks.
Forgot to add it had only done 51000 miles

No experience of these but how do you recondition an engine with no spares available? Joined the BMWX5 45e group

You cannot get hold of main bearings, crank bearings or crankshafts amongst other parts. So what should be a re-con engine will just be a mix of used parts from different engines, just cleaned up and slung together. Not sure I'd spend that sort of money on an engine that is just second hand.
If you go to this page http://www.advancedfactors.co.uk/engine-pa...3-16-c.asp they sell what you can buy, not sure how you'd re-con an engine from those parts.
Your lack of compression could be just a burnt out valve maybe? Or something on similar lines? You guys are gonna be busier than a test bench in a plunger factory!

I appreciate your replies , my problem is that a " worst case scenario " quote of a new engine ,fitted is pushing 10 k,the car is only worth approx 13k,
The diagnosis is from a couple of experienced mechanics ,but until its stripped I suppose we can't be sure.
51000 miles serviced last December ,is that an engine fit for purpose ?

This was my dilemma. A recon engine costs the same as a low mileage 2nd hand engine, but if you can't by parts, how do they recon them?
In my case, I went for a low mileage 2nd hand engine.
In your case, the body has to come off to change the engine, once the body is off its only a couple of hours to take the heads off to investigate what has failed My D3 Build Thread

Had exactly the same fault on our original engine, compression down on cylinder 1 although the injector reading on cylinder three showed as being faulty just to confuse!
10k for a NEW oem LR engine, however the LROEM recon unit is half that, ok yer got fitting, swapping over parts etc from old engine to new, would suggest yer bin the current injectors to be on the safe side, that said if fitted by LR dealer yer get unlimited 12 months warranty on parts and labour which was handy for me when the first engine fitted by LR went pete tong about 7 months later (crank went).
Another by product of LR doing it was that we only paid for 19hours labour as that's what LR say it takes but I know they did take longer, so paid a set price for it.
LR stumped up for a d4, also paid for auxillary parts and new belts (as we had em ALL changed), they also previously paid for new injectors (we went down the road of changing all the injectors before we did a compression test ).
Another alternative would be to sell it for 7k, spares or repairs and then add to it for a newer one

Although engines are getting rarer at scrappies I would have thought £3500 would get you one? Try CWS near Yeovil, I'm sure Mikey said they had one, its just they are a little more expensive but they have always provided me very good service. Joined the BMWX5 45e group

CWS wanted £3400, + shipping, + VAT
I ended up buying a low mileage one from an S-Type Jag, for £2460, inc shipping + VAT
They did have cheaper engines available at £1800, but were high mile ones My D3 Build Thread

I would say you have got to find what the problem is first, which means taking the head off but it could be as simple as an head gasket and for this reason needs checking out asap
There are a couple of examples below that I sussed out for Mikey to drool over, the first one is from a well established company who do nothing else but remanufacture engines and fit them, established over 20 years at Manchester, they can collect your vehicle and fit the engine very reasonable.
Neither are any connection to me I don't want to give there names publicly in case I break any site advertising rules, if interested PM me.

Thanks for all your replies.
We have spoken to Landrover to day, after taking all the details of the car and how the engine failed, they called back within twenty minutes .They have requested a full diagnosis of what has happened in the engine and have said it doesn't have to be at a main dealer, the garage where it is now can do it.
So watch this space.

Global Engines - no answer |
|
Ewt
I assume you haven't searched the forum for Global Engines. You should read this thread:-
http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic80614.h...balengines
having participated this this thread & re-read it today, I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.
Note that John555 pops up as a new member of the forum, posts a couple of times on this topic in February, & hasn't posted since.
Please keep posting & let us all know what the problems were with the old engine & the ultimate solution.
Good luck

I have a global engine........... (Here it comes que comments)
Have had it for eight months and covered 33000 miles in it, still sweet as a nut and tows gross all day every day
Didn't have much choice but to use them, LR too expensive for what car is worth and after recovery to stealer eventual diagnosis and then search for solution I was off road for a month and lost all earnings plus repair cost so was down £££££
They might be cagey as to where they get parts from, and I can understand people thinking that's dodgy but tbh , if you as a business had found or had manufactured the parts req would you tell all so other competition would follow and take business away, you'd be daft if you did,
Anyway ain't to goin grieve over it I have one and am happy with service given
As they say at Alchoholics anonymous......
