The garage in Ziest swapped the alternator with one out of a new vehicle on the show room floor.. I was impressed 2 hrs later we were back on the road.. BZ Land Rover.
On my return to the Algarve the windscreen frame on the drivers side blew off at 160 kmh, fortunately the shape of it meant that it hung on until I stopped and stuck it back on with some Duct tape I just happened to have in the boot (keeps the wife quiet when I tie her up) Next the passenger side frame comes off 160 kmh Back in the Algarve Land Rover replaced the window frames. Driver side comes off once again, then my wife notices the car not acting right when she brakes (It’s her car) I drive something a bit more reliable I have a look: No brake pad material on RH front outer pad 20,000 km. Told first service at 25,000km Took it in and complained about the pad and the damage to the disc and was told that I had been using the brakes too much After quoting one of John McEnroes famous lines I was presented with a bill for over £450
I had a knocking noise on the front end when going down my drive way Take it in to LR and have it sorted! Joke!! They said they couldn't find anything wrong with it. I replaced the front rocker arm bushes myself as they were finished. Driving to Spain (20 mins away from me) 120 kmh I hear a bang LH Passenger side, all hell lets loose, Alarm sounds Suspension Fault appears in the driver display. Aborted trip to Ayamonte for the Spanish Rioja and decide to investigate myself as the LR dealer in Faro is a JOKE!!!!
I stripped out the suspension compressor and find what I believe to be a manufacturer’s defect and the cause of all the compressor problems. LR has fitted a dryer unit to the compressor made from Fiber reinforced plastic.
I am an Ex Royal Navy Mine Clearance Diver so more than familiar with compressed gasses and their effects on housing materials. I believe that they have got their calculations wrong on the material thickness and possibly the material itself. The ambient temperature the day of the failure was around 35 degrees Celsius, I had selected off road mode on the suspension before joining the highway to Spain. I believe that the compressor dryers properties are compromised with the heat of the compressed Gas( in this case 21% Oxygen 79% Nitrogen) on top of the ambient temperature over a period of time, thus weakening the Thermoplastic to the point of failure, which of coarse can not be predicted.
So the more the compressor functions under change of suspension mode or weight in the vehicle the more likely this fault is to occur. The unit I have in my Hand has failed in a classic location which anyone can see is the weakest point of the container.
I'm on to LR (UK) first thing tomorrow morning!!
Fortunatley I have a Hummer H2 as a back up vehicle
I will let you know what they say

Having owned our '54 Discovery 3 less than one month we experienced the red suspension alarm. It happened three times in the week or so before the dealer could look at it. They had it for 5 days before they witnessed the fault. A couple of height sensors have been replaced, let's see how long it lasts. We had use of a courtesy Freelander 2 during the time they had our vehicle which demonstrates consideration towards their customers. I experienced the vehicle vibrations etc. at only 40mph and not towing. Has anyone had this problem occur whist towing at 60mph? How was it?

torquecar First Welcome
Look and see that the weights under the back bumper are free to swing there should be no vehicle vibrations at 40mph and look at the tyres to see there wearing evenly

Hi! WillMyth,
After searching the forum for ages, to avoid a , I came across your reference to the swinging weights at the back corners.
What do they DO?
(Searching was difficult as I don't know what to call them - I reached under the back end and found two dangly bits - IT'S A BOY, I thought... )

harmonic dampers or dynamic weights (take your pick). their function is to reduce NVH levels and counteract vibration for tha magic carpet ride.

It will make a noise ...like someone using a power drill 2 doors away ...if it gets really, really noisy the compressor compartment may need to be cleaned out

| BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH FAULT RENDERS SUSPENSION INOP |
|
HI ALL
MY NOVEMBER 2004 TDV6 SE SUFFERED A SUSPENSION FAILURE ON WED 10 OCT 2007. I HAD THE USUAL ERROR DISPLAY LIGHTS COME ON THE DASH PLUS "HDC SYSTEM FAULT" ON THE SYSTEM CHECK DISPLAY. THE RIDE HEIGHT, MOTORWAY AND SURFACE TYPE DISPLAY LIGHTS ALL WENT OUT AND THE SUSPENSION WENT TO ITS LOWEST LEVEL WITH THE INEVITABLE ROLL AND VIBRATION/BUMPS/JARRING WHEN DRIVING. IT WAS GETTING LATE SO I RISKED DRIVING THE 20 MILES BACK AT 40MPH OR LESS WHICH WAS TEDIOUS BUT OTHERWISE UNEVENTFUL.
LANDROVER ASSIST PITCHED UP WITHIN TWO HOURS (TO THE HOUSE) OF MY CALLING EARLY THE NEXT MORNING AND DIAGNOSTICS SHOWED AN INTERMITTANT FAULT ON THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH. THE BRAKE LIGHTS ALL WORKED HOWEVER. THE TECHI WIGGLED THE SWITCH AND THE SUSPENSION RETURNED TO NORMAL FUNCTION. HE CLEARED THE FAULT CODE AND ADVISED I TRY FOR A WARRANTY REPLACEMENT OF THE SWITCH WHICH HUNTERS OF BRISTOL DID THE NEXT DAY WHILST I WAITED. VERY PLEASED WITH SERVICE FROM L/R ASSIST AND HUNTERS. ALL OK SO FAR.
HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD SIMILAR, I CANT QUITE GET MY HEAD AROUND HOW A BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH THAT ACTIVATED THE BRAKE LIGHTS COULD RESULT IN A COMPLETE SHUTDOWN OF THE HILL DESCENT CONTROL FUNCTION AND THE SUSPENSION !!!!

I installed an incorrect brake bulb minutes before doing a 1000 mile trip. 25 miles in to the trip HDC fault flashed up, suspension lowered. Knowing that the garage was only 15 minutes down the road. Headed in their direction. Phoned them enroute and was told to stop and call LR assist. Refused and asked how I could proceed in their direction. Was told to cycle key and system should reset. It did. proceeded on trip to garage. On arrival pulled key out of ignition. Engine ran on for 30 seconds. Handed car over to garage, rec'd a fiat brava in return.
The following day, rec'd call from garage, service manager is really helpful and always friendly. Asked me whether I had changed a bulb, I confirmed that I had. He replied that the cause of the fault was down to an incorrect bulb being installed. I installed a single filament bulb, this shorted across the 2 pin terminal causing a spike on the HDC. They reset the computer, charged me £95 and told me I was lucky not to have fried the computer.
Now I get intermittent HDC faults, reset by cycling the ignition. Anyone know how to resolve it once and for all. Warranty due to run out in a couple of week, but reluctant to renew unless the majority would advise.
Advice gratefully rec'd, 'Use the correct bulb in future!' not helpful...
Cheers

Picked my May 07 D3 TDV6 yesterday. Today I showed the wife how everything works (it is her car after all).
Had a strange suspension situ. Started car in normal driving height. Lowered the car and then raised it back up again BUT the rear of the car sounded like a horrid grinding noice when the car was at normal level (ie even when car wasnt going up or down). Tried up , down etc but it still did it. Then moved mirrors and that moved the suspension! Swiched off car and restarted but noise was still there, sometimes coming and going. No warning messages. Drove car about 10 miles, stoppped for long lunch. Came back to car and all seems fine now. I will call dealer tomorrow.

I'd be very surprised if moving the wing mirrors would affect the height of the suspension, as after all it's completely different wiring. I think more than likely that it is coincidental, however there have been some horror stories of LR's on the road.
The screeching noise i would actually think is more than likely an EPB issue, unless of course your compressor is just about to go bang, however on a brand new car very unlikely.
Were you moving/driving at the time
Think to be honest you need to take it back to the garage and get them to check it over with there IDS for any error codes (DTC). In a new vehicle there shouldn't be any/very few as they should of cleared them all out before you drove it off the forecourt.
Welcome to the site by the way and let us know what the dealer diagnoses as the problem.

I have an LR3 HSE, 2005 I've noticed that the suspenion is a little low on the passenger side of the vehicle. Has anyone noticed this is it an issue? I took the LR3 into the dealership and they said it was fine, I took it to a secondary "Rover Sevice Center" and they measured the RH / LH height and found it to be 12 to 14 MM low on the Passenger side. I took it back to the dealer and they proceeded to fix (calibrate) the suspension system. They said it is a long and engaging process that must be performed by a skilled technician. (Okay fine)
I got the vehicle back later in the day after they said that they had calibarated several times in order to "get it right". The LR3 seems to be more level now (Although not completely).
Another issue is that in moderate (everyday driving) cornering situations a LH turn feels as though the pressure placed on the passenger side suspension is much weaker than during a RH turn being more (truck like) ridgid and firm.
I still have this feeling that the suspension is not correct.
Additionally, When I start the LR3 there is a little noise that occurs like something taking pressure and moving against something else (perhaps metal on metal), is this related to the suspension sytem issue?
If anyone has heard or seen any of these issues your comments are welcome and requested, thank you in advance.

I usually park my car facing the house, but reversed up the drive today to empty the rear. Looked out of the window to admire the view and noticed a list to the off side.
Rang my nearest service centre and booked it in for Wednesday.
I'm also having an intermittent fault with the cruise control... sometimes it works... sometimes it doesn't. Stopping the car and restarting usually clears the problem... but difficult to do on the M6! Anyone else had this problem? If so, how was it sorted? Disco 3 TDV6 HSE
