A lot quicker, and probably a bit thirstier than a TD5. I have an auto TDV6 and my average consumption over 40000 miles has been 24mpg. It can go down to 18 mpg, and can be as good as 30mpg, but overall 24 is the figure. Manuals are a fair bit better. Silver TDV6 HSE

Thanks for the link, interesting the window sticker [when new] on my TD5 said the average economy was to be 10.5L/100km...I don't think I ever seen it, but there again most of my kms are town with a bit of highway stuff..I reckon a big trip on a motorway could nearly see 800+ kms..but my average has always been 600 - 650kms tops, best 'combined' trip was 720kms..
Gee the V8 kicks along but there is a penalty !!, if you make use of it..

I came to the D3 from a V8 D2, that could consume fuel at 13 mpg. Boy it was thirsty Silver TDV6 HSE

I notice that when I start the disco first thing in the morning, smoke comes out from underneath the turbo unit, and appears to be exhaust fumes. Am I being stupid, and is this just residue from the Aircon unit, or is it likely that my turbo is knackered? This would explain my fuel economy problem too. Are you sure it's not the Fuel Burning Heater? The sight of exhaust fumes coming from under the front of the car is slightly disconcerting at first!

erm..could be. I will now list everything that I know about engines. "................brrrm brrrm". Electrics - got a degree in them, but arn't engines just the bit at the front under the plastic cover? The disco is booked into the workshop for a new screen on Thursday, so I wanted to avoid looking too stupid when asking about the smoke! Should a pre-heater smoke anyway? Surely it would come out of the exhaust. '06 TDV6 HSE with wobbly headlights and rear aircon (just to keep the dog happy) - Silver with a hint of green (or is it bluey green)

No, the FBH has a seperate exhaust under the front of the car... If you look under the bonnet on the right hand side at the front you will see the FBH. It has a minature exhaust pipe and silencer on it and says Webasto. Whatever you do don't touch the exhaust whilst it's running - it gets very hot

fair play, thanks Dan. That's my theory out of the window then! It just seems odd that some of us get a poxy 21mpg whilst others get much more - there HAS to be a reason. I agree 21mpg is not good at all. Just keep on at the dealer until you get a satisfactory result.

my problem is the superchip. Do I tell them about it, knowing full well that they will just blame that even though the problem was there before it was done. Alternatively, not tell them, and they do something drastic like re-program the ecu. If I do tell them then we're entering the warranty issue which I would like to avoid. I suppose I could tell them that I had the superchip done BECAUSE of this problem, having read that it increased the mpg. My opinion; don't tell them. If they do reprogramme your ecu won't Superchip reinstall their chip for you? I know Turbochip do...

Probably just air flow under the car... sometimes the smoke is not visible as it runs under the car not out to the side.
I would not worry... unless you have smoke in the engine bay of course

I average 11 liters / 100 kms, mostly highways @ 120-130 km/hour. Imperial units this would be about 25 mpg @ 70-80 mph
For the fumes problem, I read here that the latest software version (13) solves this

Just come back from Scotland towing fairly heavy caravan for three weeks. Covered just over 2000 miles about half towing and returned 23.8 mpg using common or garden diesel. Was fairly pleased with that as most of towing mileage on motorways at 70 mph. Engine still only done 9000 miles so it should still improve.
