Fuel consumption

My Auto diesal at 3K miles is averaging 23-24 mpg. Worse than expected. Using all fuel saving driving techniques I can think of.

In my manual 'box I am averaging 28 MPG. 13500 miles and it seems to be slowly getting better still.

On a good run can get 31-32 MPG. Average 75 - 80 on the motorway's and use the torque on A and B roads.

Seem trick is not to labour the engine nor over rev.

I did a 700 mile trip last weekend, and averaged 25.2MPG. (HSE auto). Not bad at all considering total mileage only 1700, so not loosened up yet.

Fuel Consumption

My fuel consumption is improving as the engine loosens up. At 8000 miles now and the worst figure is about 24 when I am hammering it and the best about 31 when driving most economically.

I agree that keeping the revs down (not exceeding 2500rpm) makes a lot of difference.

My wife has had an average reading of 34.3 showing, it's bizarre to sit next to her and watch the range increasing!!!!

Been averaging 32 last few days on trips to Manchester then Leeds then Shropshire then London and back.

Using BP Ultimate and range is around 600 miles if you stay below 80 on motorway - with the odd creep above Wink

Use the torque and the gear stick... better fuel, hustles along VERY nicely and also much less stressful too.

Currently range (inc trip) is showing around 640 miles.

Usually get get 530-540 out of standard diesel. Seems extra cost of the Ultimate is far outweighed by extra MPG.

15k miles, and now the average is 24.0 mpg. I think that this is the final figure, because if I do a few days of town, it drops to 23.9, if I do a few long runs, it goes to 24.1, so 24 looks like the average.

TDV6 HSE AUTO, use cruise control a lot, usual cruise on motorway is 80mph.

Any one with an auto is doing well if you reach 25mpg average. That roughly evaluates to about 16-18 mpg in town and 24-26 mpg on long runs at steady speeds.

Ecosse may be different, because he has hills, city and farm and no doubt low range on regular basis all in a reasonably local area.

You only have to cough or hit a small bump and move your foot down and the gears change down in an auto, more fuel. Even if you keep to the 1900rpm rule, it is almost impossible in an auto because it is right on the change of gears band.

jzk said auto's give better control, no they don't, even if the manual select is chosen, they still vary the revs via the hydraulics, so revs go up. Manual is when you are in control. If you place the car into cruise, bye bye fuel in an auto. It makes quite a difference in a manual, so auto stands no chance.

V8 MPG

just done 1000 miles in three weeks and averaged 18.9 mpg which i am very happy with Very Happy this was mainly 80+ motorway and very slow single track lanes in north devon.i did manage 22.1 mpg on a 40 mile run along 'A' roads before we went away on holiday, so who needs diesel? Cool
