Scotland 2012 Discovery 4 3.0 SDV6 HSE Auto Firenze RedDiscovery 4
Shell V-power nitro+

Filled up before our Kielder jaunt with the above....not cheap at roughly 148p per litre, but as I normally just stick supermarket stuff in,thought I'd treat her......
Car was definitely smoother on pick-up,and the slightly rough-sounding"pinking" noise disappeared.Over the 300-odd miles of very mixed driving we covered, the reset computer reckoned we returned 34.2mpg
I have struggled to get better than an indicated 30 up till now.
I am usually a bit cynical when it comes to these things, but I thought that was pretty good Very Happy
Wouldn't use it as a regular filler, but as a one-off now and then I would happily pay.

@ 148p per litre that's still cheaper than if you had filled up at the garage in Kielder Village Whistle

I find the same when I do a long blast to Cornwall using BP ultimate.

A bit of a treat for the engine and up to 2-3 more indicated mpg.

Thumbs Up

That's very interesting! Thumbs Up
I did a quick calculation based on euangibson results: assuming that the trip computer is correct, for driving 100km's (60miles), you'd pay 12,97 GBP for fuelsave diesel, and for the same distance 12,28 GBP if you used the V-power. So it seems that in the long run v-power is cheaper, is good for your engine and engine sounds better too! Not a tough choise then, is it? Even if the trip computer is very optimistic the 3-4 lt per 100km's difference still holds, so in the worst case scenario it could just be one or the other. The only thing to confirm then is the 3-4lt difference and it seems that it holds as you guys say.

(I used 148p for power and 138p for diesel fuelsave, found them on the internet, hope they are close to reality)

Edit: Worked a bit more with your numbers people:
Scenario 1
Assuming trip computer is correct and we have just 2lt/100km difference then we pay 12,972GBP for Fulesave and 13,024GBP for V-Power. Almost the same...
Scenario 2
Assuming trip computer is too optimistic and the real numbers are something like 26mpg for fulesave and 28mpg for v-power, then we pay 15,04GBP and 14,80GBP respectively for 100km's. Maybe it's worth it!

I find nitro is 8p per litre more so £1.48 against £1.40

I started using this V Power Nitro, and I think it makes a bigger difference in the D4 than it did in the D3.

Definitely smoother, and quieter, and as for consumption, I don't know because I drive to enjoy, not to save money. 8)

I had to fill up at a run down middle of nowhere garage the other day, and they only had basic diesel. Car was on 0 miles range, so no mixing of good and bad, and it was immediately apparent that the engine was noisier.

On a similar note, I've been filling up at a local Tesco, but I've been told that even the standard fuel is better from the likes of Shell and Esso than the supermarket stuff. Anyone else find this?

I heard that HIghways Agency drivers cannot fill up with supermarket diesel due to having engine problems. Can anyone verify this?

Maybe a better mathetician than me can confirm it but if you pay £1.48 per litre on Nitro as opposed to £1.40 per litre on standard fuel with a car that was averaging 26 mpg you would need to improve you consumption by 1.5 mpg to break even and anything above 27.5 mpg you would be saving money by buying the more expensive Nitro diesel.

Absolutely Exclamation Tesco fuel costs me between 3 and 5 mpg, noisey and a definite reduction in power Neutral
