Tow Bar Advice

Sure some-one here will know this...

Looking for a caravan (yes, groan, etc) - and saw some which have an Al-Ko hitch.
What does that mean? Does it affect what type of towbar I use?

Thanks

An Al-Ko hitch is merely the means of connecting the caravan to the tow ball. It has some pads fitted inside which help to reduce swaying and pitching, but cannot eliminate those problems which are relativly minor. If the carvan is correctly loaded there should be no problems at all. All current hitches,Al-Ko and others of which there are a few, fit on to a 50mm ball. this is an international standard. The UK used to have a 2 inch ball but that bit the dust years ago. 50mm and 2 inches are close but not close enough for towing. If you have an Al-Ko hitch you will need an Al-Ko compatible ball which is slighly taller overall than a non Al-Ko ball. Still 50 mm though.

The Alko hitch is safe to use with the removeable swan neck type. The Alko bolt on ball has an extended neck to provide the extra clearance required for the body oy the hitch.
