Tow bar help please.

Ok, so i have a removable tow bar and unfortunately the key has snapped off in the lock.

Now, the timing couldn't have been worse as we are due to leave Monday with the caravan.

Can i slot it in and just leave it? Will it engage properly?
I know I need the key to remove it (well officially) or will it be a problem?

Never used this before so just checking...... I have towed loads but not with this combination.

Thanks all.

Hi its very easy to repair.
if you look in the side of the green twist knob you will see a hole with a pin in it, knock the pin through and out the other side and the green knob and lock will pull off.
Replacements are easily availible but be aware that there are two sizes.

here is a video on how to

Hi,
Yes, I saw that online.
Just wanted to know if we could use it prior as it will take me a few days to get one.
We were due to go away early hours of Monday morning and don't have time to wait for a replacement.

Thanks

From memory you have to pull the handle to turn to release, if there is no handle there is nothing to stop the shaft turning, plus you don’t know for sure it’s locked in, I wouldn’t.
Would have thought the local dealer would have a new lock on the shelf, 5 minutes to fit.
If it’s tow ball is fitted and the keys broke open the lock, that’s different.

Hi,
if you do remove the lock you can still operate it, twist and turn it, but you wont have a "lock" istr its the main spring on the large pin that holds it in not the lock, although that does have a ratchet system but they are only plastic teeth (from memory)

You have to be happy so try it and see what You think

Thread bump...
I have a fixed towbar and want to remove it to clean it up and paint it. Lock is seized and won’t turn enough to open. Already broken one key, thankfully it didn’t fully break until removed from the mechanism. Can I follow the procedure in the video above or is it different if still locked on the car?

You will have to remove it from the car to do it properly, but to get it off the car is not so hard.

On your bar, it is just the lock that has siezed, or is it the whole mecahnism that is siezed.

If it is just the lock, then I would recommend that you simple remove the green handle (see the video, as I don't think we are permitted to explain how to do this on the forum), and then you can use a pair of pliars to remove the towbar.

I had to do exactly this when I bought my RRS a few years ago.

i had a load of trouble taking mine off when i was fitting a solid tow bar ( had a removable one orginally which was not removable XD)

I could however unlock mine but the green handle wouldnt turn to release the tow bar. The way i did it was to take the spare wheel off ( underslung spare wheel) this exposes a hole which the bar in the towball goes into to lock it in to place. Using a hammer and a centre punch/ drift bar you can hit the back of the bar and push it through until the tow bar releases, you can also keep pressure on the green handle and try turning it to help move the mechanisim

i know you were on about the lock but if its not moved for a while this will be the next step you need Laughing
