Towbar

Hi folks can I ask about the general feeling as regards a fixed towbar against a detachable one. I have read some horror stories about the detachable ones but surely they can't be that bad if fitted correctly. I have just got myself another 2014 Disco 4 so am looking to fit a towbar. I don't see myself doing any seriously heavy towing but would just like to be able to if required.

For occasional towing then I don't see any problem if the rear cross member towbar housing is in good condition (believe LR will check the tolerances for you). I've just bought a set of genuine LR 13 pin electrics which seem easy to fit and lucky enough to pick up a new unused detachable from this site just the other day. Towing wise I'm not doing anything drastic just an Ifor Williams GD85 with logs and general tip runs etc and also going to use for my bike rack.

I done the same with my D3 and had no issues. The new one I got for the D4 comes with the custom securing plate to prevent any possible drop out of the towbar however the on the D3 I never had one.

The detachable tow bar is fine for most things. I regularly use it for a smallish trailer with a quad bike on and a few times a year with a medium sized caravan. All with no problem.

If you intend doing a lot of towing and some heavy stuff, a bit of plant, big horse box or similar, then fixed is the way to go.

If you opt for the detachable one, then don't just leave it on indefinitely. Take it off when you aren't likely to use it or it can become a real job to take off.

Have used a detachable for 12 years plus on a D3 and D4 with no problem. Have towed boats, caravans and trailers. As mentioned before, remove it when not in use (and when removed, fit the red blank). Just make sure it is fitted correctly before use.

M4XLD did you mean you bought a new detachable towbar for a D4 from Land Rover and it came with a securing plate?

No the securing plate is afternarket and was purchased from this site classifieds.
