Towbar electrics setup

Hi.
I have just bought and fitted the towbar electrical kit for the two socket caravan electrics. I saved a bundle by using eBay and fitting it myself but I can't find how to adjust/map the car electrics to let it know there's a van/trailer attached and inhibit the rear park sensors. I have also heard there may be a bit of fettling to do to let the suspension know there's an additional load for it to contend with!
All I am trying to do is avoid dealer prices.
I heard from a Disco 3 owner in Yorkshire that he paid to have his tow bar electrics fitted and it took longer to process his payment than it did to actually do the job!! I fitted mine in an hour and a quarter and I'm a numpty!! The only struggle I had was routing the cables behind the nearside swinging harmonic damper.
Any advice to help me avoid stealership prices and crap service would be greatly appreciated. If it's a software type of fix then I guess I'm stuffed but I hate the local dealer (Perrys, Luton) so I will be driving to Welwyn GC or Aylesbury. Question
Dug

Aylesbury did a good deal for the car but I've not used the workshop. Luton have a good workshop but the service reception staff are wan**rs! I guess I will go to Autoland at Houghton Regis again!
I should be good with software as I have a 3 and a half inch floppy!!

What does the software fix actually do though? I have also fitted towbar electrics myself, and everything seems to work fine.

Thx

I think it allows the signals on the dash to indicate you have a trailer connected, it also (I think) updates the softare to adjust the suspension when trailer is connected. The indicators etc will work thouigh regardless of the softare update. So if you're only using a bike rack or similar, then it may not be worth paying to get the software update. A friendly word when they next service the car should do the trick.

The electrics, including lights etc work fine, even the indicator repeater on the instrument panel works but the rear parking sensors (Unless selected to 'off') sound continuosly. Apparently the software fix stops the sensors going off and assists the suspension to compensate for the additional load.
That's what I've been told.
Just trying to find somewhere I can trust to sort it.

I did the same as you and everything sorted itself out.

Have you tried connecting a trailer to see if it works? Mine did (07MY HSE).

Well, I have hitched up a trailer (with a rib on it). The lightboard works OK; the dash trailer indicator light works. Can't say I've noticed a problem with rear PDC going off excessively, and theres always the off button. So I'm really note sure what else needs to be considered.

I think I read elsewhere (another thread perhaps?) that the 'towbar software fix' disables off road height. Well, I think I can manage not to select that myself!

The only thing is whether it does something funky with the suspension in 'normal driving conditions'.

I will mention it to the stealer at the next service, but until then unless advised otherwise, I think I'm OK without the fix.

Cheers

The software change will prevent automatic selection of offroad height when you select a terrain response mode if a trailer is attached. So if going offroad with a trailer, you just need to raise the suspension manually.

Thanks all!
I think I will give it a bloody good leaving alone and keep it away from the stealers! The PDC does sound continuously but the off switch cures that. I also do not intend to go serious off-roading with a caravan or trailer so I will keep it the way it is unless I hear anything to the contrary.
Thanks again, Dug Thumbs Up
