Towbar height - for horse trailer

Hi... hope someone can give some guidance...

I have a D4 Commercial on order and will be having a tow bar fitted so that the Fun Prevention Officer can tow the horse trailer from time to time.

We have done this for the last three years with a detachable towbar on a Freelander 2 with no problems and so I had specced a detachable tow bar for the new D4... but I have just seen a post on another forum that this is too low for an Ifor Williams horse trailer!

Does anyone have any experience of this - or should I be looking to change this to the multi-height tow bar?

Wot u fink?

I used the multi-height to tow our Richardson box and it does help to pick the best height.

Hi
You need to contact Iffor Williams and ask them what tow hitch height they recommend for your trailer. A standard plug in tow bar is 400mm. I have an Equi Trek trailer and they recommend a higher hitch height so I got a LR adjustable one. You don't want to be towing a heavey trailer nose down as it makes it unstable.
Good luck.

Better to have it a bit too low rather than a bit too high, that will really make it unstable.

There's got to be someone near you with a detachable bar that could pop roiund and hook it up so yoiu can see for yourself?

I only have the fixed height which I've removed for the winter off road season Smile

Thanks Ian... why didn't I think of that!

Will ring Darren to see what he has fitted - he's less than half a mile away...

Still intrigued as to where you went ploughing in the Northants lanes...

I have towed both my old Ifor 505 and my new 511 with the standard detachable bar.
I have never had a problems with height or stability - I don't tend to hang around either!

Thanks for the various replys... much appreciated!

The demonstrator that I had (mainly to see how it towed...) didn't have a tow bar fitted!
