Towbar twin electrics
How easy is it to fit the genuine twin electrics to my 05 HSE?
Is it a case of plugging the new electrics kit in to pre installed sockets near the spare wheel?
Do I have to take it to a dealer to re programe ?

its dead easy
it just plugs into a multi pin socket in compartment near side rear[thats if its a genuine loom]
no programing req usually

Only got the dico 3 last week after defender Tdi. Couldn't stand another cold winter in the defender!
I've searched on the forum - it seems that the reprogramming by the dealer only changes the terrain repsonce so that it does use certain settings when towing. Have you heard anything different to this?

If you are in low ratio and select a terrain response programme, the car may automatically change height (Rock crawl for instance) When towpack eneabled by dealer then this auto height change is disabled. That's all
As far as fitting goes, two screws to remove near side rear light cluster. Thread short part of loom through from pre-cut hole and connect to loom connectors inside rear pocket. Then under car, lower spare, put sockets into pre-cut holes into chassis. Feed over harmonic damper (5 mins max of faffing about) then connect to first half of loom. tuck connectors behind gap in bumper, refit light, put spare back up. JD. 35 mins

Thanks for that. I will have a look on ebay tonight and get the kit purchased.
My next problem is protecting the bodywork when off roading - has anyone sussed that out?
I was think some magntic vinyl from ebay. Does anybody do a kit?

You may have to have the electrics "activated" at the dealers. This automatically senses when you have a trailer connected and turns off the rear sensors. There is some debate as to whether this is necessary or not but was advised by The Large One to get this done at a service visit to keep the costs down.

Thanks. So if I dont get the reprogramme will the rear parking sensors go off when I have the caravan hitched up?
Can I just switch them off ?
OBTW. Get a price from The Big One before you think of buying off e-bay he gives a good discount to members and it may be too close to the E-Bay price to risk e-bay. Also the members price is lower than his ebay price if he has any still on there.
Yes you can turn it off on the dash but it can be a bloody nuisance I hear.
Fairly sure that the electrics "see" the connection and self disable the PDC's. You get a little trailer indicator on the dash when you indicate too
Top tip, ask the dealer to enable when you are next in for a service or they have your car hooked up to the pc snyway. That way you should get it done for free "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

Magnetic stuff is full of it's own risks. Grit behind the panels and movement are the first real drawback Next is the leading edge gets lifted by the first branch, then it's on the floor and covered in grit, sand or mud - repeat first step and continue "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

I use magnetic signs on some of our vehicle and they have stayed on with out a problem so far.
I found a company in France who do the magnetic kits for a disco 3. Been emailing but without reply.
I would defo be interested in a product that protects the paintwork for off roading. Think I would cry if it got scratched!
Magnetic panels will not be as good or risk free as our new protection
May just take a week or two after tfc returns to get up and running.
Do use use magnetic full panels off road ? On road they are fantastic if everything is spotless when fitted - I've used some on the rally car with no problems. Off road, we were not convinced at all "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

No. not used them off road. I would have to be really sure they would do the job. I think you can get different types, some more magnetic than others.
I have been quoted £124 for 10m x 2m x 0.85mm deliverd. It comes in white or magnetic gray/liquorice colours

Yep Getting the bar enabled stops the car from changing height when a trailer is attached. On my last D3 I never bothered to get it done.Disco 5 HSE Lux
