Interesting - When you are talking 75mph , are you towing?

May make me think manual - am going to wait till spring time now anyway - see how reliability issues settle for other users.

Thanks

Paul

in France on the toll roads, the legal towing speed is 81mph/130kph except on certain windy/downhill sections.

The Senator with an ALKO 2004 hitch is wonderful, you only feel the mildest of tweaks as you break the bow wave of the front lorry with the back of the van.

I don't see anything that my auto doesn't do, you certainly don't feel changes up or down. If you prefer manuals then fine but I don't think you can claim the autos are noisy at 4,000 revs and with the 6 speed gear box 4000 revs is pretty unlikley. You need to compare apples with apples.

Interesting stuff - I can't imagine doing 75 with my caravan (a single axle abbey vogue) as it gets unsteady at 60mph when passing lorries, but I am on about 90% of the weight of my V70 T5 volvo. It can pull it fine but it is just a bit wobbly at times.

Thanks

Paul

Sturge, I have an Abbey Adventura and it tows as steady as a rock I have occasionally exceeded 60mph to over take and it sits behind the D3 very well - better than my wifes Frontera. In the middle of changing to a 26' Fleetwood Heritage - it will be interesting to see how that tows!

We were thinking of changing to the aventura twin axle job if we change cars (more room for the kids, bigger bathroom...) - But I would like a less white knuckle ride than the V70. Want to do some 400 mile tows (lakes, Scotland etc) and think it is a bit much on the poor Volvo , plus it creaks a little and has done 82,000 miles.

Sturge, do you have one of the red ALKO hitches on your van, mine was on the van and I have known no different, but it is excellent. It has never felt unstable and towed for 1300 miles in France this year and 1300 last year with the RR. It may be this ALKO hitch that makes the difference.

Just bought a new Carolina (twin) which I take away tomorrow for the first real tow. Towing it home felt more like a longer single vehicle rather than a caravan. Has anyone else felt this when moving to a twin ?

The RR was only 4 speed hence the 4000 rpm when dropping from top(4th) to 3rd. I have not towed with a D3 auto, but have driven one and didnt like the slow pick-up, almost nothing for a second and only power seemingly above 2500. I almost dont drive miine above 2500. Perhaps I drove a duff auto.

yep I have a red alko hitch thingy - the van is only 18 months old. I think it is because the van wqeighs 1380kg and volvo is 1480kg or something like that. If I put weight in the car, the back suspension (not self levelling) goes low and causes as much issues with bouncing etc. lose , lose situation.

Still learning though, Only started towing a caravan last year (Oh how I chuckled - 34 years old and towing a van - never thought the day would come when I had a TVR in the garage and a caravan on the driveway and conside buying a discovery when my most hated car was a M reg Disco I had 10 years back as a company car!)

towing with D3 manual

JUST TOWED 250 MILES WITH 1300 KG CARAVAN ON THE BACK. CRUISE CONTROL ON IN 6th ON FLAT,SUPERB. PLENTY ACCELERATION AT THE TOUCH OF THE THROTTLE FOR OVERTAKING. NEEDED TO CHANGE INTO 5th ON ANY LONGER HILLS TO MAINTAIN SPEED[65MPH]. FUEL CONSUMPTION WAS 18MPG.

ALL THE BEST
