towing socket overheating

Hello all. I have just returned from a trip towing the caravan & on pulling out the 12s plug it was very warm, & the central pin on the car had started to melt. I have towed numerous times before with this combination & had no problems. I believe the central pin is the earth for the fridge. I have just removed the socket from the car and all the wiring is ok with no signs of overheating on the loom. What I propose to do is run a second wire from the earth socket directly to the chassis in case there is a fault somewhere on the loom. Is there a good reason why I shouldn't do this? Checking the power coming out of the socket reads 14.9 volts.
The electrics are gen. Land Rover parts fitted by my dealer.
Thanks for any suggestions.

I have had this happen on previous cars, usually because the pin is not agood fit, i.e. not making proper contact and therefore arcing and causing the heat that melts the plug, make sure that the plugs on the caravan are cleaned and checked on a regular bases and also a liaberal dose of wd40 or the like. as the fridge has a fairly hefty draw if not pre cooled before traveling.

I had this on my previous car, and only found out when I changed to the Disco and the grey plug didn't fit.

Contacted my caravan dealer and they said one of the reasons was that the centre pin can close up when you are wiggling it to fit it in, and therefore just keep checking on it and open it back up with a flat balde screw driver when necessary, as this will then keep a good contact.

I have also found this link, which is helpful too....

Some link the two earth returns, 7 the centre pin and 3 together in the plug to share the load and offset the contact weakness associated with pin 7.
7 unfortunately the physically most iffy pin is the fridge return carrying a constant 7 odd amps so vunerable to overheating if not making good contact.

Wiring details of sockets is here:
