Anyone know what the expected battery life of the optional Tyre Pressure sensors is? I assume they must last at least 3 years?, but is the battery replaceable & should it perhaps be replaced at tyre changes?

Unreliable is the best way of describing them. I had all 4 of mine replaced on the FFRR due to false alarming. About a month later it started complaining the spare was flat. Since the thing is 4 1/2 years old that might be a reasonable indication of lifespan.
The ones I had in my Merc lasted until they were 6 years old. Very similar looking units so not sure why the longer life.
Batteries cannot be replaced, you have to change the whole valve unit. Dealer prices are spectacular and I got 4 off that well know auction site for less than the cost of one from LR.

Haven't had any problems with units on my car in 2 years, but you do have to keep the spare at a higher pressure than road wheels for some reason! Quite disappointing, at the cost of the units, if the battery is not replaceable & has limited, but you get used to such issues with LR

are there any batteries in them? i have them on the sport - now 5yrs old. there is no way to open them to replace a battery if there is one. i assumed it worked on kinetic energy to self generate the power...maybe wishful thinking

I thought/assumed TPMS sensors used transceivers which got the power they need to transmit just from the radio
signal from the senders in the wheel arches, but I may be wrong.
I too in the last couple of days get the spare reporting low pressure warning when first starting the car, but only for a couple of minutes, then it disappears and can't be retrieved by checking the warnings, so I'm thinking it may be cold temperature related at the mo cause it's never had a problem before and the spare pressure is well above the main wheels.

the fall in temp often causes a warning as the pressure in the tyres drops.
I just retrofitted some to my D3 - with after market at least you can see the tyre pressure and temp for each tyre.
