Trailers

Having recently moved fromt he smoke to the country, Inow find my weekends consumed with sorting out my garden, which is generating a huge amount of rubbish. With skip hire here at £160 a go, I've decide to buy a trailer, probably one with mesh sides. Anyone got any recommendations? The ones I've been looking at (6" X 4") are coming in at around £800 which, frankly, is a bit terrifying! Who knows a better deal???????

I would get a Ifor Williams P6e with side mesh and a drop down tailgate which serves as a ramp.

I can't justify upgrading my £200 one that i've had for 10 years as I don't use it that much, but I wish I had the sides to keep bushy rubbish in it.

Phil B - i did the same thing and found that a decent trailer was £700+ for something i was only going to use for taking stuff to the tip (sorry...recycling centre!), so i just bought a copy of the local ads paper (it happended to be in Somerset so it was the Trade-it paper) and found quite a few at £200 ish 2nd hand - i bought a home made one which was on an old caravan chassis with a wooden top body to it - it looked fine and did the trick for 2 years - when i moved i sold it the same way for about £170 so it was a fairly cheap way of doing it. Just make sure the its a decent size, as a mate of mine bought a 5x4 one with low ish sides and it was about as much use as a chocolate tee pot - you want a good 7' job really.

Get a single axle (they don't ask any questions at the council tip!), and go for the biggest you can afford. I have a 6'x4' with cage sides and a ramp at the back. Cost about £800. Paid for itself many times over already!

This is a subject close to my heart.
We have just over half an acre of garden that requires significant tip runs of debri which we can't compost, and we shred and compost a lot.

Many factors affect what can be best. If your tip is a bit tight /or a pain then go 6x4'. If they are nice guys buy an 8x4' every time because if you need to sell it you will get rid a lot easier, as builders etc love this size.

Mesh sides are not really necessary unless you are taking out a lot of hedge as 1 tonne builders bags .(the type you bet sand gravel in) even if you have to buy them (Screwfix) if you load lightly they are very easy to empty at the tip (esp if 2 people going). Also a lot cheaper.

Ifor williams or not?

Yes if you want to sell on as you'll get 70-80% back, tow well, but the dealers can be Censored on price, especially at this time of year (as it's there high season)

No if you want to keep it as they are not as well built as they used to be. I would look at Indespension, or Bateson stuff as they are better built and tow better, BUT they don't hold their value as well come resale.Wierd eh?
It's a Hoover vacuum cleaner thing.

Twin axles tow a lot better, but you have to be able to reverse them on the car. Twin axle would always be my advise for an 8x4 or bigger, and make sure it has at least a tonne load capacity so yopu can get bulk bags from the builders merchants.

Hope this helps.
