Transfer box oil opinions please
Two weeks ago I replaced the Transfer box oil and paid the equivalent price to liquid gold from Land Rover for the special oil. The oil that came out was grey and I think this is the first time it has been replaced within the last 95k MLS. My questions are as follows:
1) Would this be the usual colour for such old oil?
2) I hear a slight background droning noise when either accelerating or decelerating but disappears when coasting. Is it the early stages of failure?
Thanks for the advice.Cheers

Grey, in my experience, usually means a small degree of water contamination.

Grey is the wrong colour more dark brown but not as black as the engine oil I replaced if that makes more sense. Cheers

Are you sure it wasnt slivered rather than grey? silver means somethings wearing up add in your droning noise and you may have troubles ahead.
See it quite a bit on the trucks, its not the end of the world, but since we have gone to annual/100k trans oil changes (rather than 3yrs/300k) the silvering seems to have stopped.
So wait until summer and change the oil again, if its still silver you know you are on borrowed time.

Did mine last night. Old oil was dark brown but there was loads of debris on the magnetic sump plug.

Thanks for the heads up. I will change it again in the spring and check the colour again and take some pictures. Cheers

Just out of interest I have noticed that if I depress the clutch or coast the noise disappears, could this also point to the TB? The noise becomes evident at 30mph and is noticeable at 40 but then gradually disappears above 50mph although this could be due to road/wind noise taking over.Cheers
