Transfer Gearbox?? - unending saga of woe
My 05 S (manual) just came back from having the crossover pipe replaced - for the second time. First time cost £1500, this time (detected 12.5 months after first one replaced, and Landrover refusing to help) Stratstone quoted fixed-price 2.8 man-hours Actually took 2 fitters 2 days. Engine out, bodywork off etc etc. Cost £960.
On driving it afterwards, I experienced a vibration (rather like driving on a corrugated road), so it went back. It was - of course - NOTHING to do with whatever Stratstone had done to it, and they suspected the transfer gearbox or front drive shaft (it had NEVER shown any issues in this area). I declined further (extortionate) investigation, and, to my surprise, the car drove well.
Next the battery was flat after 4 days on the drive. Charged it up, and all seemed well (and battery charging OK).
Until today (2 weeks after crossover pipe) .....
While driving quite normally, suddenly grinding vibrations, and revs spinning away. I limped to a place of safety, and got recovered. Now I have no drive at all (although the engine mocks me by being smooth and quiet). I am beginning to grow used to a raft of problems following any major maintenance from Stratstone.
Any ideas anyone? Anything to depress me slightly less? This is the latest in a long list of expensive problems and Landrover have shown no sympathy at all. Anyone know a dealer (or independent) in the Thames Valley area who could raise slightly more confidence?
And the stories about Landrovers in general that the recovery driver told me on the way home, did nothing to cheer me up.
Oh yes - after the second crossover pipe failure, I wrote personally to John Edwards. Got a very nice letter back from someone in the board department, who effectively told me it was, after all, 6 years old and what did I expect ? Maybe I'll reply now.
All the best (sob) to a great forum.

Before anyone pipes up, no I was not moonlighting as a recovery driver!!!
I'll say nothing more, off to fire up the BBQ!
You could get a most good mobile indi to have a look at it, TFC fits that bill. Cluck on the email button here: http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/member179.html For main dealer try Guava Guildford, been impressed with the major work they've done on my car. Only problem is they are in demand and booked up a couple of months ahead.
