Driving my D3 auto around is fine until I start towing with it. Transmission fault comes up with limited gears selected and gearbox smells hot. Does anyone have any suggestions please?

1. Get fault codes read.
2. Check oil level in gearbox
3. Consider getting gearbox oil changed.
