Hi guys,

I have just asked my LR dealer the transmission oil question with my D3 being 6 yrs old and at 80K. They inform me that the autobox is sealed for life but if i really want to change it the cost will be £150 all in and that the diff oils dont require changing until 150K or 10 years but no costs listed for that?

Does this sound about correct?

Cheers Ceekay

sealed for life basically means until the warranty expires or the transmission dies....

once you are out of warranty you are on your own, no matter what LR say the lifetime usage should be Evil or Very Mad

Thanks DiscoDunc

Why doesnt your response surpise me!

Would be interesting to know who makes the LR oil and ask them what they think their oil is good for and for how long.

just do a forum search: there are a lot of posts regarding autobox fluid
the autobox is done by ZF who suggests fluid replacement ALWAYS before 100K km depending on usage
zf fluid (LR, audi, bmw, hyundai, jaguar... fluids) is done by shell and is called M1375.4 and seem to be very difficult to find

best price i got 18/19 euro per liter + VAT
probably LR branded costs twice

Thumbs Up

F.

Millermatic ATF DM seems to meet the ZF specs. Fixed my shuddering gearbox using Filo's excellent guide. Just been to the Alps and back with better fuel consumption in harsh temperatures.

Hi all,
We will never know the real substitute for LG6 until the contract between ZF and Shell expires.
Some claim Motorcraft's Mercon SP, others the PEntosin ATF1, and some others Castrol Multi import or transmax Z.

However, it has been suggested in the BMW forums (where many of them are buying the trans oil from LR dealers Shocked for being cheaper), I've found a very interesting report in the E90 forum, where the LG6 is claimed to be just a "mpg beater" but doing very little for the transmission health as does not disperse heat so quickly or fast as other ATFs, so harms the 'box, and the same could be said according to the forum for the Mercon SP.

Here's the link to the 7th page of discussion
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=345598&page=7

There's another great deal of investigation going on here, where LG6=motorcraft mercon SP and recommend Castrol's TRansmax Z as being developed for +1000 hours on buses
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=363648

To make a very long story short the conclusion was:
CONCLUSION

For 30K mile intervals and no racing:
cheap OEM= motorcraft mercon SP

For up to 60K mile intervals w/o racing, or 30K miles with racing:
Castrol transmax z (if you can find it in the US)
pentosin ATF 1
royal purple atf
any fluid on ZF TE ML 11B

Best regards and happy reading
Robert

UPDATE!
Ravenol company in Germany is manufacturing direct replacements for our D3's needs:

- TYK500050, or ZF lifeguard 6, or Land Rover "advanced" Rolling with laughter : automatic transmission fluid, markets their equivalent RAVENOL, complying specs from ZF, LR, Audi , Ford Mercon SP and more. Listed as ATF6HP.

Same specs as lifeguard 6.

Price, in Ebay, 6,50 euro/liter

Oh, and the unobtanium Texaco 14315 (Pas fluid in disco 2, Freelanders, D3, D4, FFRR) is also available as ravenol PSF
http://www.ravenol.de/products?part=344

They even market the MTF94 substitute (off topic, as it belongs to D2 and other r380 equipped motors.

Good to know.
They sell through an online shop but.. don't know if they can ship internationally.

Happy wednesday to all
