Crankshaft position sensor ring misaligned?

Good afternoon to all,

I am currently having some trouble with cold/first starts (more specifically) of my car.

On a quick overlook the symptoms are that the car will not start on the first go, but on the second try it fires up. This happens in the morning and after it has been sitting for some time (after i finish work for instance). Outside temp is currently around 15 degrees so glow plugs see not to be the issue. It idles rough for about 5-10 seconds and then seems ok. It seems to have a flat spot on acceleration after about 2500 rpm and consumption has worsened.

Yesterday morning it started on the first go and was pulling like a train! After work same thing happened again.

I wanted to ask if the crankshaft position sensor ring was not placed correctly or was placed without the special tool or even damaged while removing and re-fitting back will the car have these symptoms or would it simply not start?

Could these be symptoms of a misaligned crankshaft position sensor or ring?

I am now in desperate need of help as there are no real specialists around and the garage that did the gearbox say they did not touch anything on the engine.

Why do you specifically suspect it's an issue with the crankshaft timing ring in the first place? It is something that doesn't ever go wrong if left untouched.

Good morning,

The rear crank seal was changed while the gearbox was out and I’m not quite sure how it was fitted back. I spoke with 3 different mechanics and they all concluded to that.

I’m also waiting for a genuine LR fuel filter to arrive today since I’ve been reading a lot about non genuine ones as well.

If it’s running, I would say it’s not the crank sensor.

Check fueling first.

Everyone I asked here (not the forum) keeps basing their opinion of 'it would start but won't run properly' on other car brands' experience.

Update:

Just received the car last night from the shop that did my gearbox. Went back in and replaced the crankshaft position sensor trigger ring with a new one using the special tool.

So far so good. No issues on start-up and car runs so much smoother now. Power back to what it was before.

Mechanic said the trigger ring was off by about 20 degrees (I have no idea if there is a "safety margin" of +/- degrees and frankly, how it started at all if it was off by that much!) but all the symptoms seem to have vanished upon last night's drive and today's.

Only thing left to see now is how the MPG will turn out to eliminate all symptoms
