I think you need to make a list of how it works for you as an individual and what your requirements are. I prefer the looks of the Volvo, it has more space behind the third row, is cheaper and I don't need a low ratio box.

My discovery has done 11,000 miles since November

It tows, commutes, farms - spends a significant chunk of its like on motorways and around towns and cities as well as in the county.

It carries all sorts. I think its fair to say it does all things the disco was made for

It is a better place to be inside than the d4 all round better.

The load space is differently configured but it has a large space and good size seats across all rows too - just as much space when the seats are up as the d4 did.

It’s horses for courses.

In the D4, I’m more comfortable, I prefer the larger split tail gate, bigger loading aperture for the boot, bigger front door aperture, the greater distance between my face and the windscreen and most importantly the better headroom.

My family prefer the 2nd row seating in the D4, I’m not bothered Smile.

When it comes to looks/styling my preference is also for the D4.

Sadly I can longer buy a D4 or a close equivalent.

If the D5 suits your needs and you like it, that’s great. I’m jealous! 👍

Upgraded to a D5 last week. Initial impressions are I love it! Feels tighter, lighter and faster. Getting 33mpg (same engine but only managed 29 in the 4). Love the info screen, the incontrol apps and the interior. I rarely carry passengers so can’t comment on that space. Very much like the electric seats though, saves a lot of pulling and pushing!

If I could criticise anything brakes don’t feel as good, but suspect I’m not yet bedded in as less than 500 miles. On the whole, very pleased.

Had an interesting chat with an older gent who has been driving the royals round for years.

Police trained and evasive driving trained etc.

Loved the the FFR and D4s, said they are a joy to drove. But hates, and I mean hates, the D5. Its the 4 cylinder petrol (seems that was what was available at the time), and said its gutless (which I guess makes sense after all the V6, V8 petrols and V6 diesels, but worse than that he said its so wallowy and crap at corners. He was a very posh chap, and even resorted to swearing about the wallowing.

He seemed as surprised as me, since its lighter etc.

Wonder what the Royals think of the second row seating - this alone is the reason the D5 would not work for us, my teenage kids just didn't find the comfortable at all on a recent extended test drive - 400 miles in 3 days.

Otherwise the 3.0 was lovely to drive and handled like it was a good chunk lighter. No experience of the 2.0 though the seats will be the same Sad

D4 full warranty runs out in July - what to do next ???? keep it I think Thumbs Up

Hate the rear seats.

One was telling me that they seems to get bounced out of the seat alot over speed bumps and bumps in the road-probably because they are over the rear wheels...but surely the D4 seats were in the same place over the rear wheels.

Drinks were spilled over his suit.

Easy, take out a WD warranty for 3 years and await the right Defender model... Thumbs Up £1439 with all the boxes ticked, £50 excess for 3 years and will commence payments in September when LR warranty expires and mileage currently (locked in) at below 10k.

Surprised about the comments on the 2nd row seats - on the HSE they recline and have more leg room than the D4 had - my daughter was much happier sitting there than she ever was in the D4.

With regards handling the D5 is much taughter than the D4 - I can throw mine at a roundabout on the way home much quicker then the D4 would ever go round it. Whistle

I’ve not been a fan of the D5. The back end proportions of the small lights to the size of it and the tailgate, number plate etc just don’t look right for me.

However, twice now I’ve been out walking my dog and a Firenze red 5 with the dynamic pack, so black roof, and other bits along with the tailgate mod to bring it to the middle, has driven past me.

I have to admit, I really like it.
That and Corrie Grey with dynamic pack is likely the 2 colours I would consider getting one in.

That’s not going to happen anytime soon though... Laughing

I was really impressed with 2.0 diesel in the D5. I’d heard it was good, but was a bit sceptical.

I did only drive it either on my one or just one passenger though. It might not be so good fully laden or towing.

Good to have an engine choice though. Thumbs Up

The 4 pot is a joy to drive and certainly not gutless ...it's faster and more responsive than the D4 ever was and you wouldn't know it wasn't the V6 above 15mph ....very smooth. As for wallowing, the 20" wheels on low profile Verde's do tramline more than say 19"s with Duratracs ...but the D4 had way more body roll by comparison.

It does rev really well. I wouldn’t ever swap it for my 3.0 EU6 SDV6 though, they really fly. 8)

I think he mentioned it was petrol not the diesel.

I'm not sure we haven't all got a bit picky and precious, they all drive fantastically well compared to a D2 and if you're buying any of these to throw round corners you've bought the wrong car spend a few quid more and buy an M5.
