I've done it with the ignition on.
I think it does it startup cycle, and then I thought it went limp

Can I just state, from personal experience, it does not go limp once the 'ignition is on', and the pre-ignition cycle has been completed.
The pre-ignition cycle is very important for effective ignition, apparently.
It stays firmly in place until the ignition is off and it has gone thru the ignition off cycle.
But again, I am reliably informed that the ignition off cycle is also very important.
If you find it is going limp after the ignition on cycle, and not staying firmly in place, my understanding is that there are pills available for this but I'm not entirely sure whee you put them in a D3. Drop them in the fuel tank maybe?

sorry for the hijack
Just how free should the arm be? I'm concerned that mine has broken inside - the little pawl that moves the ring on the vanes perhaps. As it's really really free ..... but is that normal?
I'm trying to get to the bottom of it having a lack of power below about 1700rpm, replaced the driver's side intercooler hose and checked for air leaks elsewhere and I've also replaced both egr valves but it still seems sluggish to me - very little smoke, apart from when the turbo decides to do something after about 1500rpm. It's my first D3 though so I could be looking for a non-existent fault, I do feel my td5 and 300tdi were better low down though, especially on hills

Mine is pretty free.
Other threads I read before tackling this suggested that there should be next to no resistance in moving it.

Has anyone contemplated getting the local Carbon Cleaner to come out and do a Hydrogen carbon clean?
It has done wonders for me, with instant and noticeable performance boost.
