I've had a look through this section and I cant find any mention of this before so appologies if I missed it.
I parked the car on the drive at my dads this afternoon facing down hill, when I turned the engine off I got a horrible noise from the back of the car, o/s wheel area i think. It sounded like 2 bits of metal being ground together which lasted for about 2-3 seconds. I restarted the engine let it run for a minute then switched off again, same noise. There was very little diesel in the tank at that time so assumed it was caused by the slope and the lack of fuel. After re-filling the tank and parking on level ground the noise didnt re occur until i got home again parking facing down hill but a less steep slope. I had stalled the engine a few minutes before though. I immediatly drove the car up and down the street with no problem and parked in exactly the same spot, this time no noise. I've only had the car 2 weeks, so far I love it so I really hope this isnt the start of somthing bad.
Any ideas??

I think it may have been the EPB (handbrake) normal operating sound? if it was you should be able to duplicate the noise by putting your foot on the foot brake and putting the handbrake on and off .

EPB needs adjusting / cleaning out.
The EPB will engage automatically at engine off.
Its not normal and will get worse.
If your D3 is only 2 weeks old (either in age or the amount of time you've owned it) I would be asking the supplier to get it fixed FOC.
You can disable the EPB each time you switch off by holding down the button while you switch off the engine. Make sure you leave it in gear though As you will be un-braked.

Hi Rich,
Welcome to the D3. I concur with my other colleagues - its definately your EPB.
My D3 is 4 years old and I have regular trouble.
The dealer should adjust it FOC and make sure every time you get it serviced they clean / adjust it as a matter of course.
Just a weakness in an other wise great car!!

Well I'm puzzled then because the brake was on, the second time it happened at dads I wasnt even sat in the car. The brake is a nice quiet whirring as I imagine it should be. Could it be that there was a lack of fuel in the pipe/pump for some reason after stalling or low fuel tank levels while on the slope? I've been out again this evening and there was no noise when I got home. Perhaps its one of those things to keep an ear out for, if it happens again I'll take it in.
Thanks for replying though.

Doesn't sound like an EPB problem to me. Your first post suggests something else - not least as you did nothing more than restart the vehicle. Being a manual, the EPB would have remained on unless you deliberately released it.
The clue may be in the level/unlevel ground. Possibly suspension self-levelling and something is snagging somewhere.

I was inclined to agree with Winger until this weekend. I have had no further trouble with the car until saturday when I was out greenlaning with some freinds. The noise happened often during the day but not every time I used the park brake. On a few occasions the brake malfunction light came on with a message on the info screen, the brake wouldnt release and could only be released if the ignition was switched off for a minute. Would the fact that mud and water was being sloshed around have an effect?
I'm going to call the dealer in the morning to get it booked in.

I sometimes get a grating noise if I stop on a hill. If I hold the vehicle on the foot brake & apply the EPB I get a grating noise when I release the foot brake and the load is taken by the EPB.
Just as an aside, my Disco is a manual and the EPB releases automatically when you pull away, no need to press the button, just like the auto.

Yeah thats it. Had it diagnosed proplerly Tuesday and its going in next week to get sorted. Its got worst since then and I'm trying not to use the brake at all.
Thanks for your help guys. By the way the dealer claims not to know anything about the sinking seat thing.
