I've been wanting to do this as well, but never got around to it. Also, had no idea what I'd search the forums for.

I was also thinking of trying to get a bulb holder that had the extra wire already there.

But at least I now know why they did it it the way they did. I always thought it was weird having the 2 brake lights, but only 1 of them wired up. I live in Canada, so no worries about a MOT test.

Thanks for the post.

Also, if worried about failing a MOT with this mod, just grab a bulb and blow the brake filament with a bit too much current, and stick them in in when it comes time for the test. Only takes a few minutes to swap the bulbs back that way.

If you are doing this mod and subsequently became worried about MOT failure following this mod, simply place an inline fuse in both wires you are adding (wouldn't add joint blocks, bullet connectors etc personally, as these can be more problematic with poor joint connections etc) - then simply remove the fuses when MOT time comes round - simples!

Hi Robbie,

It is too small to make enough of it and I cannot find it in the documentation I have... does this mean the bulb holders including electrical components can be ordered from LR?

Yes, the bulb holder can be bought separate from the lamp, in the picture it is item number: 13412

Allright, thanks Mikey!

So this means this whole project comes down to two bulb holders from TLO, a bit of wire and soldering and you're done!! Great!!

Looks like the actual bulb holders are not available as a single item but I fail to see why you'd bother buying a whole loom, chopping out the bit you require and soldering it in when you already have 99% of what's required.
You're only missing the copper contact and a short length of wire.

I appreciate some people are not as hands on as others but buying a whole loom to chop up is like replacing your wheel and tyre because you've lost your tyre valve cap. Rolling Eyes

Depends what the loom costs. If it is less than £20, then its almost a no brainer.

Saves the time and hassle of getting the copper, making it the right size, bending it accurately enough, fitting it etc Thumbs Up

Or, even better if you can find a broken lamp, and pick it up for pennies Whistle

My two penneth worth... In bad weather, will the glare from too many brake lights mask the indicator? This is a complaint with the FFRR (the indicator can be overpowered by the brakelight in certain weather conditions and missed) and if you are now encasing the indicator on the D3 with a brake light above & below... Can you braking then indicating in bad weather lead to someone rear ending you?
A, No-one wants an accident big or small...
B, Insurance cover?

Just my thoughts on the subject Thumbs Up

The part number for most vehicles is YND500070 and for the North American market YND500080 - to cater for the additional side markers.

I'm sure Nick could provide a price but I notice that the OEM part, rather than direct from LR, is £13.85 (+ £2.77 VAT in EU) on Britcar. I've not searched around so it may be cheaper elsewhere.

I've seen this mod in the flesh and it looks good. It does change the 'picture' when the brakes come on and off but to my eyes it does not really mask the indicators. Compared to the abysmal indicator and front light combinations on some lesser cars it is still a league ahead and far better than the FFRR mistake.

Still, it does carry an element of risk and may attract unfavourable results with insurance, police and MoT stations. Again, a few run their D3s like this and I have not heard of a problem to date.

So why did I not do it if I think it looks ok - well the D3 canbus/ECU is intolerant of noise on the brake light circuit and I decided that the chances of a brake circuit induced problem at least doubled by this modification.

Hopefully that is a balanced view but all opinions are welcome.

great mod, good work! i just did this with 100 yr old copper piping cut open and hammered flat (and sanded, new lease on life!).

took 30minutes! dont bother buying a loom etc, its extremely straight forward.

But D4 (at least here in italy) has the "double" stop and the "geometry/lay out" of the rear lights is the same (D3 vs D4)
