Twin Electrics & Trailer Battery Charging

Hi all,

I have looked and found some results, but not all that good with electrics, so would be great if somebody gave me the idiots guide.

Anyway, planning to have a leisure battery in the Sankey camper, have no issues understanding how that works and how I can stick a solar charger on to the trailer.

What I'm struggling with is how and what I need to set-up so I can charge the battery and run things in the trailer from my twin electrics on the back of the Disco. I know that the Grey coloured tow electrics is used for charging caravans etc., but what do I need to to plug into this and what do I need on the other end to connect to the battery inside the trailer - I've been looking around, have come across loads of connectors etc, but how should this be wired up?

Is there not something that i can simply purchase and plug in/Attach?

Finally, can I leave the 12v fridge attached tot he battery all the time, while I'm charging the battery?

(Sorry for the basic questions Embarassed )

Cheers
Iggy

If you wire your sankey correctly then you can leave it connected all the time.

The trailer normally has a constant 12v should be pin 4 on the grey connector normally 20amp feed.
This would go to a relay on the trailer. This is the one which will power the batteries but when the car ignition is on.

Pin 6 possibly red is powered when the car is on. It is used to switch on the relay on the trailer above. This also feeds to the fridge.

You can leave your fridge connected to the trailer battery so the fridge is on all the time and then when you start the car the car then recharges the trailer batteries.
TBH the cable at the tow socket is only 2.5mm max and it'll struggle to recharge your batteries if they are in use/low.

Do you have dual battery on your car? Or an onboard split charge?
I'd run full size battery cables from the car aux battery to the tow socket and fit an anderson connecter. Then on the trailer an anderson connector to the batteries. That'll charge your sankey batteries up properly when the car is on.

Wiggs done this on his trailer and I'm in the process of doing it to mine too.
You should see some pics in his gallery. I'm sure others may have done similar and some different.

Someone else may comment similar or their own thoughts.

Good luck Thumbs Up

Thanks Ian, no dual battery in mine, so starting from scratch....so visited the local caravan shop today and spoke to one of the technicians, he talked me through the process and told me what i needed to get as well as a sheet explaining what I needed to do.

So going to have a play now, got connectors, battery, cable and diagram, so 1st step is to get all that connected and working, then we'll see how we get on to the next stage Thumbs Up

Hi Iggy,

I have the twin sockets on mine and use it as Ian suggests above, it works a treat and the 115ah battery last several days with the fridge and LED lights in the tent.

I just use the switched positive to feed the battery and run the fridge off the battery, plus I always fully charge the leisure battery prior to trip.

Hope your well and looking forward to meeting you at Chepstow.

Regards Phil.
