Tyre Blow Out on M1
Morning chaps, had a bit of a nightmare yesterday driving back from work. Hit some debris and caused a blow out on the M1 130 + miles from home.
Managed to get to a safety lay-by with help of highways agency, but was a bit of a nightmare as there was no rear hard shoulder to get safely off the motorway.
I called my recovery company initially before the highways helped me, but the breakdown came out and we changed the tyre.
Had a boot full of kit, so obviously had to empty the lot out to drop the spare. Why a pain!!
Thankfully, I have a full size replacement, so after changing, I was back on my way.
So question is what to do with getting a new tyre. I currently run GG AT which I am happy with, but was possibly going to try GG AT3 when the time comes for a full set.
The current set has around 6mm on them, so am I best to either:
•One new tyre, leave rest as they are
•One new tyre, use spare as well which is full tread and not used, and effectively have 2 new tyres on rear with matching tread depth
•One new tyre, put set on fronts with full tread, and the front tyres, which are slightly more worn on the rear
• Look for used tyre with similar tread to other rear tyre and use that, and put full tread spare back underneath.
Any advise appreciated, I will obviously get the rim checked before I get a new tyre put on. I’m not too far from AJS tyres, so will probably use them.
Cheers

What I’d do if i was looking to change tyre types is just run as you are now and just get a well used (say 4mm tread) tyre off someone on here and use that as a spare. Ok if you have another puncture you’re into getting a new tyre.
Or get an AT3 now, use it as the spare and plan to get 3 more when tyres on car need replaced, putting the “new” AT under as spare.
I don’t worry about matching tread depths, ran all sorts of combos on the D3 with no issues.

I always prefer to have matching tyres on an axle. Ive been in your position before, with a full set of matching tyres (disco2) the got a nail in the side wall of one. You're then left with deciding on one new tyre or two.
My first thought wold be to try to find a similar worn used tyre, and put your spare back under.
Or get one new, and keep the spare on the car, put the other part worn under as the spare.Richard

Agreed re matching tyres in an ideal world but if spare is a different type (obviously same or compatible size (rolling circumference)) the it would be fine as a temp replacement, maybe keeping to say 60mph/100kph, until sorted.

Had exactly your problem not long back on the M1 too! hit a bit of exhaust
I have GG ATs, I replaced both rears at the the same time as I like to have equal tyres on each side. Kept the half worn good one as a backup, might even put it on the spare so it goes back on the tarmac with the next puncture.MY06 S - Gone but not forgotten

Thanks for the info guys.
I might see if I can find a used spare to finish off the current set, then I can replace the full set in one go.
If I can’t find a used tyre, I will possibly buy a AT3 as a spare and keep the current spare on. Good ideal Del

Is it just me who thinks taking away hard shoulders from motorways is insane rather than “smart”?
Glad you got home safe!

Almost as bad as no hard shoulder is a hard shoulder without a barrier to get behind. Had that experience a couple of years ago when the exhaust on the Jazz rusted in two during heavy traffic on the M4.

A further option (which I have done in the past) is use a smaller tire fitment center and ask them what they will give you for the three part warn GG that you have on the vehicle now, you may be surprised!
Then you can work out a deal for a full set of new GG 3s between you.

Thanks for all the comments.
Hopefully going to pop down to AJS tyres and sort something out.
Might manage to pop down at lunchtime tomorrow if a courier collection comes in time!

Ha, yes about 220 miles in the D4 then an AugustaWestland 139, although I had a 169 on the way back in this time.
Didn’t need a blowout on the way home, but it did get me out of doing the weekly shop on the way home!

All sorted now courtesy of AJS Tyres.
Top work by Andy and the lads. They had a part worn that I managed to get stuck on which is exactly the same as the damaged tyre, so I will wear this set down as planned.
Just need to give my RLD spare protector a clean up and sling the spare back underneath!
