Tyre pressure monitor system

As above, i had a puncture on the rear of my car overnight. The tyre went soft to about 30ish psi with a nail in it. The TPMS displayed a message "saying check all tyre pressures "on engine start up. I thought ,and the manual says it should display a message telling me the position of the tyre and if it is soft/flat/to high etc including the spare. I took the spare off the car outside the local tyre depot as he was busy at the time and wheeled it into his workshop and away from the car, when it was my turn to drive in i was expecting some kind of error message as the spare was now missing? The tyre was replaced and the positions of rears, spare and puncture replacement moved around on the car. Again when i had finnished and drove of i was expecting some kind of error message as it says in the handbook about moving wheels around and having to drive "x" amount of distance to self reset. Anyone have any experiance of this of how it is suppost to work as the manual describes nothing like what goes on??? It is an 8.5MY HSE with the TPM system fitted. Question
